Habib Carouba Obituary

Habib Afif Carouba

May 25, 1932 - October 19, 2016

Those who knew Habib Carouba described him as "larger than life." Known and loved by many throughout his eventful life, Habib was at the center of many a colorful story. Often mistaken in recent years for the "most interesting man in the world" featured in a popular beer ad, he was known for giving an autograph or two when taken for this colorful fictional character (who could have learned a thing or two from Habib, if we're being honest). He always had a twinkle in his eye that let you know things were about to get interesting.

Habib immigrated to the United States from Jaffa, Palestine, in 1948. In short order he joined the U.S. Army - "I credit them for making a man out of a scrappy little kid from Jaffa," he recently said - met the woman who would become his wife, Alice Clancy, and proceeded to get busy creating a life (and five children, in rapid succession).

Struggling to learn English, support a growing family, and assimilate in a new country, Habib began as a busboy and waiter, often working three jobs while attending business school at night. It's a good thing he had the energy of three people… he needed it. He learned English quickly, and studied Frank Sinatra for fashion tips. He cut a dashing figure in what would become his signature look; a well-fitted suit, always a suit. Restaurant ownership came next, followed by many years of successful entrepreneurial pursuits that extended as far as Hawaii, New York and many other cities throughout the United States.

Habib Carouba died as he lived, on his own terms, in his own time, and just as he had hoped: without suffering, struggling or pain. He quietly went to join those who predeceased him - his mother, Alexandra Carouba, brother Nick Carouba, and sister, Vivian Fakhoury. He leaves behind those for whom he had the greatest love - his wife of 63 years, Alice Carouba, sons and daughters-in-law, Nicholas and Phyllis Carouba, James Carouba and Secret Fine, and Joe Carouba and Alix Lutnick, daughter Annie Carouba and her partner, Molly Shem, daughter Mary Carouba, brother-in-law Lou Fakhoury, sister-in-law Katie Carouba, the grandchildren he held dear, Charlotte and Joanna Carouba and Ryan and Alli Schultz, and great-grandchildren, Abby Schultz and Jake Stone Carouba Vela. He also leaves behind greatly loved cousins, nephews and nieces, friends and business associates, his card-playing buddies and so many others. All of us will miss our beloved Habib.

A viewing will be held on Tuesday, October 25, 2016, 5-9pm, with an invocation at 7pm at Duggan's Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Ave, Daly City, CA (NOT the Duggan's in SF), followed by a service and memorial gathering the following day, October 26, at 11am, St. Nicholas Church, 5200 Diamond Heights Blvd, San Francisco, CA.

Today is October 5, 2022. I missed Habib today just as much if not more than the day that he passed, It is this I wrote to Habib on the day of his passing, it is just as true today as it was on October 19, 2016... It is with a heavy heart interwoven in the fabric my extended family Mary, Joanna Carouba, and each loving member of this beautiful family; the family Patriarch, rich in wisdom, wealthy in humility and full of gracious generosity has taken flight to his rightful throne seated at the right hand of our God through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ... then comes the call of God from glory, tonight your soul is required of thee, May you rest in peace as we mourn for you in gratitude of all you have contributed to the lives of others by touching our hearts and creating tools for a greater tomorrow, Habib your legacy lives on as we remember you here on this earth as God has welcomed you with a warm embrace. Goodnight Habib, have a restful slumber as God beckons you home. Habib, enjoy your well deserved rest as we enjoy the path that you have cut for us, soon we to will see you and Christ Jesus at the top!

I have not seen Habib in over 30 years. I’m sitting in a Lebanese restaurant in Thailand, and for some unknown reason started thinking of Habib. My father used to own Maxferd’s , on Market St. , and Habib used to come in frequently ,with that smile.

What a smile.

Easy going , very classy , relaxed and always a joy to see.

I’m sorry to hear he has passed away , but I’m richer to have known you Habib.

Rest in peace dear Habib.

You were, in one word , a joy.

Bless you my friend.

Shukron Ammo, for everything. I always had the idea that I would return to the bay area and see you again. I love you and will miss you. With all the love I know, Steve.

I knew and loved Habib for many years. He was my friend, my boss, my advisor. I worked for him at Market Street Cinema, the Campus Theatre, and the Strand. I met him in 1982 through Murshed Kahlil who worked at the Tea Room Theatre, owned by Abdo Droubi.

He was class. He had an air of power and authority about him. He was indeed, larger than life.

My condolences to his wife, Alice, to Jim (who I knew and worked with at the Campus Theatre) Joe and Nick. Also to Tayseer (Ted Sood) I know they were very close friends.

Eternal Rest grant unto Him, O Lord, and let thy perpetual light shine always upon him. Amen.

Stephen (Brackens)

I will miss you Amo, Shukron for everything.

At the dinner at the Presido last month, Habib said we'd all have to talk to Joe now. Joe is just one guy and he's got a lot on his mind. So, I decided to continue to talk to Habib. He's already told me to get on with it; he's delighted with all the love that's been shared and generated with his latest move. Things have changed, but Habit's legacy lives in so many hearts. Incidentally, Habib said you're all welcomed to talk to him anytime (as always) once he gets situated. Habib isn't really dead, he's just laying low, waiting patiently for us to give to others what he tirelessly gave to us. Taylor Dwyer, San Francico

Uncle Habib, we will never forget all the wonderful memories of you as we were growing up, we had so many laughs and great times together, on family holidays in London, Syria, Jamaica, Lebanon, you were always smiling and positive and your wonderful laugh was infectious. You will be truly truly missed and never forgotten. We love you.

To all my dear cousins, the Carouba Family, from you Michigan family, Bernice Azkoul and her family, we send our love and prayers to you all. When Aunt Alex came to this country, they came to Akron Ohio to see us. Aunt Alex and my Mother Victoria were sisters. Habib and I hit it off immediately, being the exact same age, and became fast friends. Every trip I ever made to California was to see Habib and the Eid family, all of them so dear to me.
My memories are sweet and my love is deep for all of you. May he rest in peace and may his memory be eternal. Your cousin Bernice

What a shock to learn via Facebook Habib has left us. I saw him last year in Sebastapol, after having lost contact for 40 years (he and another friend of many years came to my book reading). He looked wonderful, he was the same charming and genial man I'd admired in the 70s. He could put anyone at ease and was much loved by associates and friends in all his ventures, I believe. My heart goes out to all his family. Having lost my own much loved mother last year, too, I know it's never easy. How lucky we all are to have had these dear people in our lives.

Habib, You are an inspiration that will live through the vastness of time for generations to come... ~Lisa

October 21, 2016

The depths of my heart have reached new levels today as I recount the moments spent with a dear friend, no, not a friend, a family member who just passed recently. A family member who believed in me to the point that extended past my own self beliefs and propelled me into being greater than I thought I'd ever reach.

It's is in these moments of reflection, these moments in your life that will live forever, beyond this lifetime because someone believed in you, someone became a mirror showing you the grand possibilities of a tomorrow that once seemed like a dream. Habib taught me a certain type of business acumen that reaches beyond the common thinking, he taught me everything in life is a negotiation and the importance of investing on your own terms, living life on your own terms, and that family isn't always blood...
Family are the ones who are there for you in tough times, love you because of your flaws and sees the best in your worst.

Habib always told me how strong I was when I felt like falling apart, he told me I was destined for bigger things when I was just a little girl from Tahlequah who couldn't see beyond the dirt floors of Cherokee County. He will continue to inspire me through the greatness of Mary and Joanna. Habib was and forever will be one of my most respected mentors, my friend and most of all he is my extended family that doesn't require the definition "extended".

Thank you Habib for always being here for me, you will forever be Family and you will forever live in my heart,...

I love you Mary and Joanna.
