Harry Moss Obituary

Harry Moss
February 28, 2024
Harry Walter Moss, Jr., a long-term San Francisco resident, passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, in Gilroy, Calif. He was 76.
Harry was a professional writer and journalist, starting with the student newspapers at Cal State Long Beach, where he graduated in journalism, and San Francisco State University, where he received his MBA. His later career included stints at various publications, among them the skateboard magazine Thrasher and as the editor of the Guitar Center News. He was a regular contributor to the San Francisco Business Times and the San Luis Obispo New Times, under the byline H.W. Moss. His fiction included the novel "In the Shadow of the Pyramid", a historical dark comedy set in San Francisco that was published in 2015, and numerous short stories. His e-books include "Youth and Other Science Fiction" and "Googol The Great". His written work lives on through his web page, www.netnovels.com .
Harry and a business partner-contractor purchased their first fixer-upper, a triplex in the Fillmore District in 1974, later selling it for a profit. They subsequently acquired buildings in the Mission District, which Harry eventually retained. He owned buildings in San Francisco, Marin, Oakland and Minneapolis.
The income from his real estate investments allowed him the freedom to concentrate on his writing. He was a regular contributor to Herb Caen's eclectic local columns, typically using the nom de plume Art Deco. When Caen eventually wrote that he wondered if Art Deco was a real person, Harry's Art Deco wrote a note to Caen taking great phony umbrage. Caen subsequently published the gist of the note with an apology. Harry saved the clippings where his various remarks appeared over the years, eventually concluding that they totaled an entire column.
Harry Walter Moss Jr. was born in Riverside, Calif., in 1947, to Harry Moss Sr., a deputy district attorney and Elizabeth Ann Donnellan Moss, a psychiatric social worker, both WWII veterans. He was preceded in passing by his parents, including his stepmother, June Lee Reyno Moss; and by his brother, publisher, Stephen D. Moss. He is survived by two brothers, Kioren Moss and Lt. Col. Francis R. Moss; and two sisters, Amritamurti (Alice) Moss and Laura M. Greer; numerous nieces and nephews and an extended family. A celebration of his life will be held in San Francisco on a date to be announced.
Harry had numerous girlfriends over his lifetime, but resisted marrying any of them. He was also squeamish about memorial services.
"I don't do well at funerals. I'd like to miss my own."
-Harry Moss, Jr.

Harry and I were friends who invested in real estate. We bought that first building together back in the 60's. Our friendship lasted over 50 years for a reason, we liked each other. He was a great guy who lived a full life and did it his way, and he is missed.

Harry always loved being with family. Here are a few pictures of some of the times he hung out with his mom's side. He always made an effort to travel to weddings and reunions, whether in the US, Canada or Ireland. I remember visiting him in San Francisco and the wonderful tours he would give of the city he loved. In 1994 some friends dropped me off for a weekend with Harry and they hung around for a beer before heading off for their own plans. Harry got to talking about his city and before we knew it, we were all driving around, walking around, stopping for a beer or snack at some of his fave places, and ended up drinking and shooting pool. Those guys had a great time that night and never went on to their other plans.
Harry was loving and fun and he could be cantankerous and frustrating. He valued friendship, family and writing.
I loved him and miss him.

Harry and I dated in our late 20's from 1976-1981. We had a lot of fun & interesting adventures together. This picture was from 1976 when we rafted down the Truckee River in Tahoe. He always came up with the best Christmas presents... One year it was "egg coddlers", another year it was cutting boards he made from buying a wood lane from a bowling alley. My sister has been using hers for 45 years. He loved music, writing and San Francisco. He was a charmer and I will remember him with love.

I first met Harry in 1969 when I move into the next door apartment on Linden St. in Long Beach. He was just finishing his last year at Long Beach State and I was just starting at LBCC having just got out of the service. We have been friends ever since. I remember tasting is first batch of home brew beer- Let me just say he got better at it over time. I also became friends with many of his friends, Jim and Kay, Bob Blyberg, and Welcome to name a few. He even performed at my wedding (I was one of his few failures). There are Harry stories too many to mention and so many terrible jokes to relate that I could go forever. I will miss his phone calls (and his bad jokes) but most off all I will miss him. There was no one quite like Harry.

I will always remember Harry's love for arcane facts. Harry and I were friends for 55 years, and I am going to miss our joke exchanges and discussions about movies that we both had seen, but that I had forgotten about.

I met Harry in the 70s in Pacifica at cable channel 8!. He was the sales department and he was a go-getter! I ran into Harry in San Francisco and he actually helped me buy my first house. We remained friends and he always pitched me on his stories. He was tenacious and he always had a smile even over the phone. I will miss talking to Harry and turning down his latest pitch. A character with a great heart. RIP my friend.

Harry was one of my dear friends! He was also my boyfriend, Joe Woods, landlord. On Sundays, he'd pick me up in his Fiat and take me to his favorite Dim Sum, hole-in-the-wall, spot on Irving. Then, a Chinese market down the road to get his seaweed & crab salads. Other times, he took me to see movies with his Press ID. He showed some many things about San Francisco. He loved our City. He brewed his own beer and made the best soups. I think the last time we hanged out was in May 2021. We went to the Embarcadero and visited Coit Tower. I miss him already

Kioren and Family
It has been a long time since I saw Harry having moved to Australia 33 years ago but we did catch up on one of my visits to SF years ago.
I met Harry at Jim V. house in 1966 my first year at LB City College. Over the years I became close friends with him and Donna Jean, those were wonderful times. I remember the stories he would weave and his passion for his work.
I will remember him every year on the Day of the Dead part of my Mexican culture.

I was honored to know "H.W." for over 25 years. He had the quickest wit and was one of the funniest storytellers I've ever known. I always enjoyed reading his short stories which he'd send to me for feedback. I'll miss Harry...
