Hazel Best Obituary

Hazel J. Best Jan. 5th 1921-May 4th 2011 Our dearest Hazel passed away on May 4th 2011. Hazel was in her 91st year, she is survived by her sister Reby Jerome. She will be reunited with her sister Lillian Palmer and brother Nelson Best. Hazel will be greeted at the gates of Heaven by her father Beecher Thomas Best and mother Ruth Alice Ramsay. Hazel will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews and friends. Hazel was never married and had no children. Her life was full from the time she left Prince Edward Island in 1937 at the age of 16 and headed to Boston where she stayed until 1948. She then moved to Seattle until 1954. Hazel then moved to San Francisco and this is where she called home and stayed in the same apartment from October 1954 until May 2011 Hazel was a very independent woman that loved to travel and had seen most of the world. To family and friends she was an inspiration. She enjoyed the company of many people and also spent some of her time at several senior centers. She was a member of the Canadian Woman's Club, The Breakfast Club and each day would head to the Greco Cafe to meet with some of her dear friends. It was a wonderful life!! A memorial service will be held at Calvary Presbyterian Church on May 24th at 1:30pm located at 2515 Fillmore Street S.F. (415-346-3832) Contributions can be given in honor of Hazel to Coming Home Hospice (415-861-1110) or one of the Senior Centers that she attended at Calvary Presbyterian Church (415-346-3832), Grace Cathedral (415-749-6300), or St Francis Lutheran (415-621-2635) Cremation has taken place as per her wishes. Hazel will be laid to rest at Freeland Presbyterian Church P.E.I. later this summer.

I met Hazel at Levi's. She was my first indication of how to retire well and interestingly. The way she conducted her life continues to inspire me. Such a light.

Hazel was always up, dressed, and holding the door for me when I left 956 Sacramento for work.

We talked about PEI quite a bit, as I have good friends who live there. I will miss her smile, and upbeat candor.

Hazel was my son's (Austin Phillips) great aunt. She had a lot of class and style. She was always interesting to talk to. She also did a lot of charity work in San Francisco. She will be missed. May she rest in peace.

Aunt Hazel will be sadly missed and we take comfort in knowing she will now be our guardian angel and look out for Scott and be the kind and gentle soul she always was. Fondly remembered and always loved, Nephew, Scott Phillips and family, especially his children, Dylan and Hope ( who was born on Aunt Hazel's birthday 11 years ago).

I worked with Hazel for years at Levi's. She was the kindest and sweetest person I ever met. It was always a good day to see and speak to her.
