Hugo Perez Obituary

Hugo Perez
January 17, 1965 - March 20, 2024
Hugo Perez (a.k.a. Hugo Alberto Perez Ornelas), passed away peacefully, at S.F.G.H., on March 20, 2024, surrounded by family members; and his partner, Roger Solomon, hand-in-hand, until his last breath. His untimely passing was due to cardiac arrest.
Hugo was 59 years old, born in Mexico City, Mexico on January 17, 1965. He came to the U.S., at age 15, finishing high school in Oceanside, Calif and working to support his family in Mexico City; then assisted them, and children, to get established in the U.S. This required working multiple jobs, to also help raise two nephews and a niece. Hugo, unconditionally, sacrificed for family and friends. His love and compassion touched many lives, more than others realize. Hugo did volunteer work for Project Open Hand; as well as assisting and visiting elders. He was a kind soul with a big heart. Hugo will be deeply missed by many.
His field of employment included restaurant management and public storage facilities. Hugo attended City College of San Francisco.
The second part of his life was spent with Roger, his devoted partner and best friend of 29 years. They, happily, blended their Mexican and Filipino cultures and families. Survived by his beloved mother, Maria Elena Ornelas Castro; four brothers, Jose Luis (Maricella), Victor (Sandra), David (Carolina) and Oscar Perez; sister Patricia Harvey (Joe); nephews, Charles (Jessica), Christian (Silvia), Eliud, Uriel (Katrina), Damon; nieces,..; Salma (son Santino), Fernanda, Abby, Diana (Dan), Shiloh, Sage and their children; close family friend,..; Maria Soriano (Scott), extended family, and many friends and associates. Hugo was predeceased by five siblings; a nephew; and his father, Pedro Perez Lopez.
Special thanks to the dedicated medical team, at UCSF ICU, for their attentive care and support of Hugo. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery limited to family, upon their request.

Hugo is the person who asks for nothing, and gives everything.
Hugo is the person who does his best to make things better.
Hugo is the person who won't forget you, and you won't forget him.
Hugo has a spirit that flies, and now he's free of all earthly bonds.
Hugo is here for us each time we think of him.
Love for Hugo and love and comfort for Roger and all who love Hugo.

We offer our sincerest gratitude to Hugo. His brilliant smile was always a bright spot in our day - a neighbor as generous and kind as Hugo is incredibly rare. Hugo will remain in our hearts as he inspires us to give our very best to our neighbors, friends and loved ones at every opportunity.

Hugo was a very friendly, cordial and sincere man; he gave the warmest of hugs, and would go out of his way to help the people he found needing a hand, or just some time not alone. Many times he surprised me when he was handling so many compromises at once, making sure he was being there as much as his time allowed to show his interest and dedication to the things he knew matter most.
I loved his tiny garden full of whimsical souvenirs where he created little memorials of the many loved ones whom he never had far from his big heart.
He was quite a guy. I am happy I got to meet him, and sadden that I will not enjoy his company and resonant laugh.

In 2011, Hugo began volunteering at Project Open Hand, where he selflessly served clients in the Grocery Center. His most recent volunteer role involved setting up the Grocery Center for a successful day, working alongside POH staff and volunteers.

Hugo´s legacy lives on, etched in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed-a beacon of love and compassion forever remembered.

With Love,

Hugo was a kind and gentle person who cared and love my Cousin Roger. He also extended that care and compassion to my mother who passed away an over a year ago. There is never a time that he wouldn´t offer a helping hand. His smile always warms my heart. My condolences and prayers to his family and partner, Roger.
