Igor Smirnov Obituary

Igor Vasili (Ed) Smirnov

84, passed away on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 of an apparent heart attack. Ed was born in Harbin, China to Evfalia Vasilievna Feskova and Vasili (Bill) Thomas Smirnov. He immigrated to the United States as a young boy and grew up in San Francisco. He earned a degree at University of San Francisco after which he joined the Air Force and became a fighter pilot. He met Irene Alexandrovna Druzhinina and married her in 1953; they had two boys, Mark and Michael. Ed made a career of the military and was stationed across the country. He flew the F-84 fighter/bomber and the F-100 Super Sabre, among others. He also had tours in France and Korea before retiring to Klamath Falls, Oregon in 1972. After the boys were grown, Ed and Irene bought and managed rental properties in Klamath Falls, and they ran race horses. Ed enjoyed reading, was an avid 49ers and Giants fan and passionately followed politics. In 1992 Ed and Irene returned to California, living in Sunnyvale, and finally settling back in San Francisco in 2011. Ed is survived by his son Mark Smirnov and Mark's daughter Kristen and by son Michael Smirnov with Michael's sons Zachary and Jake. Ed was preceded in death by his wife Irene. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 on Friday, September 20th, 2013, at the Serbian Cemetery in Colma, California, followed by military honors graveside.

Ed and Irene were such wonderful partners in the race horse business. Ed always loved driving the motorhome to the tracks and watching the horses race. My heart goes to Michael and Lynette, losing both parents within months must be so hard. Our prayers are with you and all your family.

I did not know Igor, he was 30 years prior to me but it is always sad when we loose another member of the SRMA cadet corp, it is one more empty space in our ranks.

I am so sorry for the loss of your loved one. Please find peace and comfort in Psalms 65:2.

I was at the San Rafael Military Academy at the same time as Igor and could never forget that name when I red the SF Chron. obit today. We both graduated at the same time in 1947, he from high school and me from grammar school. When he went to USF, I went to Lowell with Warren Hellman and Richard Blum from SRMA. He was a nice friendly guy and my heart goes out to his family for the loss.
