Jack Miklos Obituary

Jack C. Miklos

Jack C. Miklos died on June 16, 2016, at his San Francisco home, just one month shy of his 90th birthday, with his wife and son at his side.
A native of Moscow, Idaho, Jack earned a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart in the Asian Pacific Theater during World War II before serving in the American Foreign Service for 36 years. During his diplomatic career, he was posted in Yokohama, Japan; Tangier, Morocco; Istanbul, Turkey; Nice, France; Bombay, India; Colombo, Sri Lanka; and twice in Tehran, Iran. During his later posting in Tehran as Deputy Chief of Mission at the American Embassy, he also served as interim Charge d'Affaires during the Pahlavi regime. Before he retired, Jack was stationed in Washington, D.C., as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs.
Jack received a master's of science degree from Stanford University. He attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, where he established a permanent scholarship endowment in memory of his father, Jack D. Miklos, which supports 15 students each year.
Jack is survived by his wife of thirteen years, Helga Justman, and was predeceased by his first wife, Rhoda Virginia Knudten Miklos. He also is survived by his son, Stephan Douglas Miklos (Lorraine); two daughters, Shari Judith Behrens (Tom) and Melpomene Irina Doner (Dennis); seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his stepson, Alex Justman (Sandy); his stepdaughter, Dr. Jessica Justman (Jack Lerner); three step-grandchildren; his sister, Margaret M. DuBois; and one nephew. He loved and was loved by all and will be greatly missed.
