Dr. Jack Vogel

Dr. Jack Vogel Feb. 19, 1923 - Nov. 10, 2006 Dr. Jack Vogel died Friday, November 10, 2006 in Greenbrae, CA. A dedicated optometrist in San Francisco for 46 years. Beloved husband of wife Ruth for 53 years. Loving father of Stephen (wife, Alice), Jeffrey and Cindy. Brother of Harry Vogel of West Palm Beach, FL, and sister- in-law (late) Dorothy; sister, (late) Sophie Simon of Winston-Salem, NC; niece, Sherree Syden (husband, Gary); and grandnieces, Samantha and Nicole and grandnephew, Justin; and nieces, Suzanne Buchanan and Gail Simon. Jack was born February 19, 1923 in Liberty, NY. His family moved shortly after his birth to Brooklyn, NY, and his father opened a bakery on Kings Highway. After a few years his father decided to move upstate to Poughkeepsie, NY, and opened a second bakery. Jack graduated Poughkeepsie High School in 1940 and entered the University of California at Berkeley when he was 17 with an optometry major. He completed one year of optometry school when WWII started. Jack joined the U.S. Air Force studying at Yale University and Reed College for officer's training. He served as a communication officer in the Air Force during WWII. After the war Jack returned to Cal in 1946 and received his optometry degree in 1948. He opened his practice in the Sunset District of San Francisco and treated many families over several years. He was a member of the Sunset Merchant Association and Sunset Lions Club and volunteered as the optometrist for the Jewish Home for the Aged in San Francisco for several years. He was a member of the San Francisco County, California, and American Optometric Societies and a U.C. Berkeley Alumni. After practicing for 46 years he retired in 1995. In his retirement Jack enjoyed traveling, golf and playing in his favorite poker games. Ruth and Jack were married in 1952 and moved to Greenbrae in 1959. He was an avid sports fan and followed all of Cal's games as well as all the other Bay Area teams he loved. Funeral services will be held at the Home of Peace Cemetery Chapel, 1299 El Camino Real in Colma on Wed, Nov. 15 at 11:00 AM. Interment to follow at Salem Memorial Park Cemetery also in Colma. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
