I was one of a group of Stanford Earth Sciences graduate students who had the good fortune to take classes from Jake in the 1980s. He was brilliant, extremely well-organized, and an inspiration. He was also formidable. A scientist's scientist.
I mourn his passing, and I'm grateful for having had the opportunity to know him, and to learn from him.

Jake was my PhD research advisor and I am forever indebted to him for his inspiring teaching, his patient guidance, his encouragement and his friendship. I have fond memories of discussions with him not only about science but also about life - his was a long and rich one filled with varied experiences in Europe, the US and Israel. I recall on my last visit with him how proud he was of a family tree he was completing. My deep sympathies to Ruth, his children and grandchildren.
