November 13, 1919 – November 15, 2018
James Ramsey Bancroft, a long-time resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, passed away in San Francisco on November 15, two days after his 99th birthday. Born in Ponca City, Oklahoma to Charles and Maude Bancroft, he and his three younger brothers, Robert, Charles and John, moved to Redlands, California in 1931. His father was a disabled World War I veteran, having never fully recovered from the Pneumonia Pandemic of 1918. Therefore, from a very early age Bancroft worked odd jobs. His favorite childhood job was as a "curtain raiser" for a prize fight in 1928, receiving $5 for two one-minute rounds. He was eight years old.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

James was an exceptionally kind and interesting person. I chauffeured James once to the Brubeck family dinner after Dave's passing. We hit it off, talked the entire trip, and he invited me in to meet the family because I told him that my "wife," Gay, and her first husband had been friends of Brubeck. He also invited me to the cathedral, where I had thought of going already to Rep for Gay, and made certain that I was advantageously seated when I arrived. He gave me his card and an open invitation to visit him whenever I was in San Fran.
James was perhaps the friendliest and most plain down-to-earth person I have ever met in his class. It was an honor to know this man briefly, and I wish we'd had the opportunity to meet and converse again.

I would like to get in touch with Jim's family. I met Jim and represented one of his partnerships in the 1990s. My late condolences to the family, he was one of the inspirations in my life. I still remember him carrying two big boxes of files into my office at 88 years old. He was an impressive, optimistic and charismatic influence in my life that will be missed. Larry Levy

Dear Bancroft Family,
My condolences to all of you. I had the privilege to serve on the Vascular Cures Foundation Board with Jim for 8 years and have him as a friend for even longer. He was a friend, advisor, and a true gentleman. They don't make them like him any more. He will be greatly missed!

Jim was very nice to me when I was new at Brancroft McAlister and always kept in touch since. I'll miss his annual Christmas letters telling of his many travels and all the news of his children and grandchildren.
