James McManus Obituary

James Henry (Mac) McManus 70, a native of CA passed away January 18, 2011. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Carole. He remains the cherished father of Kate and Jordy. Jim was the son of the late Thomas K. and Margaret McManus and brother of the late Bob McManus. Jim is survived by his brother Tom (Mandy), sister-in-law Addie McManus; niece Molley; and nephews Mike, Patrick, Jim and Andy. He leaves memories with his Rehoboth Beach Clan including more McManii, cousins and friends. Jim was in the tennis arena for more than 50 years as a player, administrator, supporter and fan of the game. Jim began his tennis interest at the Berkeley Tennis Club in his younger years. As a founding member of the ATP, he served on its original Board of Directors in 1972. He spent 28 years on the ATP Tour staff, involved in all aspects of player services and professional competition. Jim was actively involved on the ATP Challenger Committee and the USTA Pro Circuit Committee in an effort to help future generations of professional tennis players. Jim's tennis game was the same as he lived his life off the court. He was hard-working, consistent and talented. Although he was a very good singles player (ranked in the U.S. Singles top 10 three times), he achieved his best results in doubles (ranked in the top 10 four times and twice # 2 in the country with different partners). Even more important than the rankings, his charm, interest in mentoring others and his behavior; earned him many sportsmanship awards and honors. Even umpires would describe him as "Gentleman Jim." The USTA awarded Jim the Wm. M. Johnston Award, an honor bestowed on the nation's top player for character, sportsmanship and contributions to the game. As much as Jim loved tennis, he had many other talents and interests. He was an avid photographer, made movies, played the accordion, painted, sculpted and in the late '70's, he had a cameo performance in the movie, "Players." Last year, his book "Tennis History" was published tracing the history of tennis tournaments around the world. Jim's life will be celebrated on Sat., March 26th at 4 PM at the Berkeley Tennis Club, 1 Tunnel Rd. Berkeley, CA 94705. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ATP Tour Charities/Jim McManus Fund, 201 ATP Tour Blvd., Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082. Jim ("Manner") was a great mentor and inspiration to me as a young player at the BTC. His steady and reliable hand helped guide me on and off the court, showing me true dedication and commitment to sport and life. Along with Gene Cantin and Torben Ulrich their kindred spirits are sorely missed but not forgotten.

Jim (Manner)was a true sportsman and great human being. He mentored me throughout my junior and collegiate career. He was kind and humble and patient and gave me much more than I ever deserved. But that is how he was with everyone. Tennis has lost a great friend, and I will miss his smile and easy laugh. My sympathy goes out to his family and many friends.

In the early 60's when I was learning the game at the BTC, Jim was the icon, the example of tennis, always friendly and encouraging to the junior members and a marvel to watch with his two handed strokes. We'll miss him.

Jimmy was one of the most gracious, sweet and kind beings I've ever known. His family lived next to my grandparents in Berkeley and I always adored time spent with him when I was a little girl! He popped into The Claremont Hotel the evening of our family celebration for our mother's 80th birthday, in 1995. We were all thrilled to see him! Such a lovely last memory of a precious guy!! My thoughts are with his family and the families of his brothers.
