James Murad Obituary

James Murad
June 4, 1935 - December 31, 2020
James (Jim) Murad passed away on December 31, 2020.

Jim was born in Detroit, Michigan, on June 4, 1935. His parents were Greeks from Turkey, who emigrated to the US in the 1920s. Jim, a first generation American, grew up in San Francisco. After graduating from George Washington High School, he spent four years in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served with the Military Police. After being discharged from the Marines and finishing university, he received his JD from Hastings College of the Law. He was admitted to the State Bar of California in January 1964. He worked for the Attorney General of California for two years. In 1966, Jim joined the San Francisco law firm of Cooper, White, and Cooper, where he practiced real estate law and ultimately became managing partner. He left the firm in 2001 and represented Lawrence Chan of San Francisco and Hong Kong. He continued to represent Mr. Chan, and several other clients, until his retirement.

After retirement, Jim enjoyed working with stained glass, initially buying and restoring old pieces. He later began designing and building his own pieces and accompanying frames. Constructing the frames inspired him to pursue woodworking, which became his passion. He studied and admired Greene and Greene architecture and furniture. He worked diligently throughout the rest of his life to create pieces reflecting that style.

Jim and his wife, Ruth, had a long marriage. They lived in Marin County for 40 years, during which time Jim served on the Belvedere Town Council and the Marin County Civil Grand Jury. The Murads traveled throughout most of Asia, and were both involved with the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, where Ruth was a longtime docent. Jim served as president of the Asian Art Commission.

Jim was predeceased by his brother and only sibling, Jordan Murad (Angela) of Milbrae. Jim is survived by his wife, Ruth, and two daughters, Allison de Gravelles (Patrick) and Celeste Murad. He is also survived by his much-loved three grandchildren: Flint Weldin, and Natalia and Vincent de Gravelles, as well as his niece Connie Newell (Mike) and nephew Christopher Murad (Lisa) and many great nieces and nephews.

His family thanks the nursing staff and rehabilitation therapists at the San Francisco Towers for their loving care during Jim's illness. Contributions in his memory can be made to the Asian Art Museum, the San Francisco Opera or to any charity one chooses.

I had the great pleasure to work with Jim in the mid-1990s as an expert consultant. Jim was a wonderful attorney and a fascinating individual.

I worked with Jim for many years, first as his associate, then as his law partner. Jim gave great meeting, with his basso profundo, and his avuncular affect -- I couldn't do that, but a lot of what Jim taught me I was able to integrate into my own practice -- giving thoughtful, considered, frank advice, the good with the bad, knowing who's the client. I'm a better lawyer for having worked with Jim. He will be missed.

On my first day of work at Cooper White & Cooper in 1974 Jim was the first person to greet me warmly at the door, and from then on I was the consistent beneficiary of his advice, support and generosity. Around me was self confident but humble in many ways. He introduced me to clients of his and encouraged them to work with me on my own. He helped make my career enjoyable. I offer my condolences to Ruth and the rest of his family.

Jim Murad was a kind, gentle and patient soul with a great legal mind. He guided our company through many challenging years in the 1990's as both legal counsel and trusted advisor. Of course he was also a passionate supporter of both the Asian Art Museum and San Francisco Opera, volunteering as a supernumerary in many Opera productions. Jim had his lovable idiosyncracies, and was always willing to share his advice on healthy eating! Jim was always a great listener and we will all miss his friendship.

Jim is the most respected in my lifetime. We span over 30 years working together, first as my legal counsel and later, after his retirement, as my most trusted advisor.
I will miss him dearly, and I, as a Buddhist, will pray for him and wish him forever happiness in the pureland

My first entry was co-worker but I changed to friend. I worked at Park Lane and C&L for 18 years. Back in those days, Jim was the ultimate feisty curmudgeon who always made the most sense out of anyone in the room. I will miss you my friend.

I've had the great pleasure of knowing James for over 20 years with our mutual interest in Asian art at the Asian Art Museum. Always with a smile and a pleasant thing to say. We both loved wood as a medium. Enjoyed sharing information with him. Will miss him dearly.

Jim was such a gentleman to me. I remember being at his house for a Cooper, White, Cooper firm holiday party. A lot of people were there and the Murads were prepared for all of us. At one point I was lost in thought and when I came back to the party, so to speak, Jim was looking at me from across the room. He may have wondered if I was ok.
I remember being in, I believe, Hawaii with my husband on firm business. A number of lawyers were going to dinner one evening. Apparently I was lagging behind and Jim called our hotel room and said, "Your chariot is waiting." It was such a classy way to get me down stairs. I have always remembered that sentence. It represents him.

I am sad to hear of Jim's passing. We worked together easily as attorneys for challenging clients. I enjoyed Jim's collegiality and intelligence.
