I was so sad to see that Dr Simonds (Jim) had passed this life and yes far too young. I worked with Jim as his chair side assistant when he was stationed at the Navy Yard in Washington, DC. Jim was a wonderful dentist - and fun to work with , other technicians always eager to take my position just to work with Jim. Yes - his humor and jokes were legendary. I recall his prized small Porsche sports car - which reflected his happy , youthful carefree personality. He was always smiling - what a joy and breath of fresh air he was in our dental clinic. He made an impact on my life - showing me that you could perform a serious job while easing a patient´s anxiety and enjoying your job. He encouraged me to continue with college courses - I didn´t make it to dental school but I went on to get my BSN & became a career Navy nurse. I remember LT Simonds fondly and his kindness. I am so sorry for the family´s great loss. Sharon (McCamley) Gaertner

Somehow I missed learning of Jim´s death. We met as colleagues when Jim was the editor of the California Society of Periodontics newsletter and his sense of humor mixed with his excellent writing made it a must read for the Society. At meetings I always sought him out; our common sense of humor infected each other. But I think I knew him best when he came back to the UCSF perio residency program to teach about once a month and I relished the time we taught together. He was a wonderful teacher; smart and innovative and patient. He shared all he was going through with his cancer and I could not believe he was still running and exercising. He loved philosophy and when I visited Edinborough Scotland I took of photo of the statue of David Hume just to show him. Jim was a remarkable man in many ways, kind and humble and a superior periodontist. I was always glad to see Jim come into the clinic because I knew he would teach me some new technique and share a few laughs. I miss him.

I am Jim´s older brother by two and a half years. We called him Mr. Middle because he was the middle brother, born in the middle of the century in the middle of the year. But there was nothing average about Jim. He excelled in every facet of his life. He was always and without fail there for me whenever I needed him. I will never forget his kindness and generosity and I bless his sacred memory for all time. Way to go, bro!

I am Jim's older brother by about two years.
Growing up, we were treated like twins. There was no hint in our childhood that he would evolve into the extraordinary man he became. I marvel at that.
I miss him every day. We say no one is truly gone as long as they are remembered. I will always cherish his many kindnesses to me, the quality and content of his character, and his endless supply of jokes. Jim, I hope you're with Mom and Dad and at peace at last.
The middle picture is of Jim in November 1960, age 5.
