James Yardley Obituary

James Cameron Yardley Sr. Died July 24, 2009 in Santa Rosa, CA, at the age of 84. "Jimmy" was born March 13,1925 and raised in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland. Jimmy was born into a piping family, and started playing bagpipes at the age of nine. During WWII he served as a piper in the Black Watch and marched in the village of Le Deliverande, Normandy, July 1944. In 1964, he moved to San Francisco to play in the San Francisco Caledonian Pipe Band, where he later became Pipe Major. After retiring from the band, he was a respected senior judge at numerous piping competitions. He was a proud man who worked hard all his life to raise his family, and took great pride in his life achievements in the piping world. His contributions to piping history will be remembered for generations among the pipers of Scotland, Canada and everywhere else his music touched. Jimmy is predeceased by his wife, Isabella (Ella), survived by his sister Jenny Duncan and family of Australia; eight children and their spouses Wilma and Dave, Janice, Elizabeth and Jose, Patricia and Bruce, James Jr., Tracy Yardley, Isabella and Jim, Jeanette and Pete; 16 grand-children and five great-grandchildren. He is loved and will be missed by all. Dad you made us proud to be "Yardley's" and proud to be Scottish. Your imprint is forever in us all, say hi to Mum. Friends may visit Wednesday, July 29th, 4:00 PM with a Celebration Of Life Service 5:00 PM at DUGGAN'S SERRA MORTUARY, 500 Westlake Ave. Daly City, CA

It will be 13 years since I last saw you. I miss you. We talk about you often. Things in the world are so different now. I wonder what you would think. Do a jig, play the pipes & love mum.

Grandad,

The more I learn about your life, the more I'm amazed about the things you've done. You were always so humble. You make me proud to be Scottish and I know you will be close anytime I hear the pipes being played.

I have a photograph somewhere, taken by Kit or my Dad, of Jimmy judging me in one of my first competitions, circa 1970. Since then there have been many memorable times with him in the piping world. I especially recall him traveling with the band to Scotland in 1978. As a judge and teacher he always had kind words and good advice.

Recently some of the band old timers were talking about Jimmy and how we had not seen him at the games recently. We assumed that he was no longer driving and talked about having someone pick him up and bring him to Pleasanton to see the bands. I regret that we missed the chance.

And speaking of driving, I will always remember wee Jimmy, in that enormous red convertible. It often looked as if the car was driverless!

Rest in peace, Jimmy. You will be missed.

Dad, who you were helped make me who I am...strong, caring, determined, and proud. It was my honor to be with you in these last days. Thank you for reminding me again how precious life is and the importance of keeping those we love closer to us. I love you Dad and miss you already.

My condolences to the Yardley family.

I remember Jimmy having a twinkle in his eye and a kind word to share. It was always a pleasure to play for him in piping competitions.

We will miss you, Jimmy!

Growing up I used to be so frustrated when my Dad ('Jimmy') would be practice the pipes in the house and we couldn't hear the television! When he no longer played I missed it terribly.

I am proud to say I am Jimmy Yardley's daughter and just as proud to say I'm a Scot!

I love you Dad.

Sorry to hear of Jimmy's passing! I have fond memories of Jimmy's stories and his help in the piping community. His guidance and advice to all in the Prince Charles Pipe Band was invaluable.
