Jeanne Macchello Obituary

Jeanne Macchello
May 23, 2023
San Francisco native Jeanne's story began in 1927 on Holladay Avenue in Bernal Heights when she was born to Clotilde Marzorati Cappelletti and Giovanni Cappelletti, part of the first wave of Italians coming to California. She graduated from St. Peter's Catholic School in the Mission, later marrying the love of her life, John Macchello, an early arrival to North Beach from Italy. Over 57 years, until 2010 when he died, they shared their love with four children, Rita Macchello, Gerry Macchello (Deborah), Judy Macchello Riccio (late John) and Laurie Macchello (Alec Kay), and grandchildren Gianna and Carina Kay, Isabella and Joseph Riccio, and John Macchello.
Jeanne's vibrant life was the hub of spirituality and joy for her loving family and multitude of friends attracted to her warmth, humor and noble spirit. For nearly 50 years she contributed unending energy to her beloved Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where she was parish secretary. There she exemplified her deep values of family, friendship and faith, welcoming all who came to the rectory. She inspired and supervised the monthly and famous Spaghetti Luncheon, and guided baptisms, First Communions and weddings. She worked with Fr. Guglielmo Lauriola, whom she called her brother, and adored the Franciscan Friars and the Sisters of Mercy. Jeanne retired at age 90 when the church closed to become a chapel of Saint Anthony's.
Jeanne and John enjoyed spending summers with the family at their summer home at the Russian River in Monte Rio. Jeanne was a great cook and entertainer. She enjoyed her special "Manhattan," and socializing with her big circle of friends, and especially cherished her children and grandchildren. In recent years, she took them on holiday vacations. Her life was entwined with her older sister, the late Aldiva Fontana, and the connection continues today among their children.
She never missed monthly gatherings of the decades-old Sexy Sewers Club begun as a young mother as well as attending Young at Heart at Immaculate Conception and Over 50's Club at St. Elizabeth's Church, and was a proud member of the Italian Catholic Federation Chapter 1. She was an active member of the ICE Mother's Guild while all four children attended school there.
In addition to her children and grandchildren, she is survived by her nieces and cousins throughout the United States and Italy as well as her sister-in-law, Lorraine Macchello.
Her children take heart in this message as they mourn: "You left us beautiful memories, your love is still our guide, although we cannot see you, you're always at our side."
Rosary services will be held on Tuesday, May 30, 7pm at Duggan's Serra Mortuary in Daly City Funeral will be held at 10am Wednesday, May 31 at the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, 3255 Folsom St., SF
Donations may be sent to the Franciscan Fraternal Care Trust Fund, 1500 34th Ave., Oakland, CA, 94601.

Besides sharing the same first name, we shared an appreciation for a good Manhattan cocktail. She always bid me to come sit next to her and we would sip our Manhattans and chat about life with her giving me wonderful advice. Jeanne was a woman of faith, family and love of neighbor. She's was and is a role model. She will be sorely missed.

Dear Rita, Gerry, Judy and Laurie,

Your mom was a very special woman, and the world was a better place because of her. She meant so much to our extended Italian Famiglia and was the heart and soul of the family. She always made everyone feel loved and important with her sincere words and generous spirit. She gave the best hugs and loved telling stories at our family picnics! She was the glue between the generations. I know there is a BIG party in Heaven happening right now with all the Italian angels in our family who have gone before her. I am sorry for your immense loss and heartache.

Lots of love,
Susie
& the O'Brien/Frimel Cousins

My heart overflows with gratitude for all that Jeannie shared with me during my 10 years as principal at ICE. No matter what was going on I need only walk through the kitchen when Jeannie was there and I would walk out with a smile and laughing. She was such a gift!! I still smile when I think of her and thank God for her. Love, Jeanne (Sr. Jonelle)

Dear Macchello Family,
We will never forget the goodness that Jeanne and the Spaghetti Luncheon crew showed to St. Anthony-Immaculate Conception School and parish. While I was Development Director at the school (2012-2018) it was the acknowledged social center for the neighborhood and much of The City. Civic leaders often stopped by to join the group, including Vicki Hennessy on her way to becoming Sheriff. Jeanne will always be a hero and an angel to us! Constance Dalton

I remember Jeanne when I was young and my Grandmother, Margaret Turturici was working and cooking the spaghetti lunch for almost 20 years, Monday night bingo, and of course, the yearly crab feed. My Great Aunt Rosalie Wolf and Great Uncle Bob Fragmenni were also very fond of Jeanne. Thank you for your years of service! Great memories, rest in peace.

RIP Jeanne. A fond memory I have is all the times I went to the Macchello household and many times there would be some good old ICE style pasta on the stove. "Have some pasta David! You´re too skinny!" Ha. She was the rock of ICE and the church and rectory. She treated all her kids friends as if they were her own. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Love, Kim and David

To the Macchello family,
So sorry to hear of your Moms passing. Although I know we are related, I´m really not sure how. I went to ICE from 1960- 1963, and I still remember how hard Jeanne worked at the spaghetti lunches, and she was always happy. RIP Jeanne, you left an amazing legacy. You will all be in our thoughts and prayers.

I really can´t say enough about Jeanne. She was one of my first friends when I moved to the bay area. She willingly invited me into her home and was always so kind and compassionate. I miss her cooking and friendly conversation around the dinner table. Her strong spirit will live on forever. My respects to her family during this difficult time. Rest In Peace, Jeanne.

I was always amazed with Jeanne´s energy when it came to the crab feed in October and pasta luncheon once a month - that drew so many people into the ICE cafeteria. She was an inspiration to all. The leader of this team of workers was led by our captain named Jeanne. And as Jeanne would say - it should be noted that the recipe for the best pasta lunches was the "holy water!"

We know you´ll always be in hearts

We have lost a great friend and family member. I met Auntie Jeanne on Florida Street in the early 60's. my cousins lived in the downstairs unit so we always would be there for holidays, birthdays and warm summer nights.
When i got married and we were looking for a babysitter, Auntie Jeanne said she knew some one but we had to promise to send our kids to ICE when they were school age! Needless to say, all three of our kids went to ICE.
I cooked at pasta lunch for a couple of years as well as attended the lunch for many years with my father.

Our whole family will cherish all the time we spent with Auntie Jeanne.
