Jeannine was born to Freda and Leon Winant of San Francisco. A child of the Great Depression, she and her sister Dolores witnessed the country evolve from a world in which the family owned a cow and made their own wine to the world we live in today.
A faithful Catholic, Jeannine attended Mercy High School in her teenage years, trekking from her home in Daly City to Burlingame via Streetcar No. 40 each weekday for classes.
She met the love of her life, Louis Arata, soon after he returned from WWII, while Louis was mowing his mother's lawn. She was instantly smitten, and the pair were soon married.
After marriage Jeannine became a homemaker, and as her children approached their teenage years, she taught herself bookkeeping in order to become Louis's office manager.
She loved cooking, playing bridge, and gardening, but family always came first. As a young mother, Jeannine insisted on ushering her husband and children from Millbrae to San Francisco every Sunday night for dinner with her parents and sister. Years later, after Jeannine's grandchildren were born, she turned Louis's office into a makeshift daycare center to dote on the youngsters on a daily basis, adroitly juggling her office work and new young charges.
In later life, after her father's death, Jeannine also devoted herself to helping her mother and her ailing sister, Dolores, until they passed away.
Jeannine is survived by her four children and their spouses: Beverly & Rick Boitano, David Arata & Kathlene Caverly, Michael Arata & Penny Jones, Diane & Richard Koss, along with her twelve grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
We are all grateful for the loving care she received from her long-term caregivers, Miguela Dagdagan and her husband, Clarence. Miguela was by Jeannine's side when Louis passed away after 67 years of marriage, and she and Clarence made it possible for Jeannine to live comfortably in her home until her death.
She will be missed by all.
A celebration of life will be held for Jeannine at St. Dunstan's Church in Millbrae on January 19 at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Jeannine's memory may be made to the St. Dunstan Conference, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, or your favorite charity.
