Jeffrey Filter Obituary

William Jeffrey Filter

December 11, 1950 - April 10, 2015

William Jeffrey Filter, aged 64, died peacefully at home on April 10, 2015 after a yearlong struggle with Pancreatic Cancer.

Jeffrey, beloved son, brother, husband and father was born on December 11, 1950 in Dallas, Texas, and raised at Congress Lake, Ohio from 1953 on. He graduated from University School in Cleveland in 1969, and attended the University of Southern California where he earned a B.A. in 1973 and M.B.A. in 1975. Jeff was a member and president of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, Delta Pi chapter, USC varsity Crew and Rugby teams, and a Trojan Knight.

Jeff moved to San Francisco in 1975 and spent the rest of his life in the Bay Area. Jeff's financial career spanned forty years starting with Solomon Brothers, and continued with Hambrecht & Quist, Woodman, Kilpatrick & Gilbraith, Alex Brown, Campbell Cowperthwait, and Merrill Lynch. He was a past member of the San Francisco Bond Club (club historian and president 2002) where he received the Oliver V. "Hobbs" Merle Memorial Award in 2000. He was also a past member of the French and Olympic Clubs, as well as a current member of The Bohemian Club, and Walnut Creek Sunrise Rotary, where he established the award winning "Fiscal Fitness" program for high school seniors. Jeff's biggest joys were playing music – guitar and piano - and bringing people together for great food, wine and conversation. He was the consummate storyteller and considered the "historian" for friends' and club lore. He was a regular at Sam's Grill and a true Bohemian.

Jeff is survived by his wife Victoria Von Arx, daughter Elise, son George,
sister Susan Filter and her husband Peter Koch of Berkeley, sister Karen Filter of La Jolla, mother Nancy Himmelright Wickes of Berkeley, father William H. Filter and stepmother Peggy Filter of Reno. Should you desire, donations can be made to UCSF to help find the cure for Pancreatic Cancer. Send checks to USCF c/o Sarah Krumholz, P.O. Box 45339, San Francisco, CA 94145-0339. In the memo line write "Andrew Ko's research in memory of William Jeffrey Filter."

Sorry to hear of the loss of jeff. thinking back as to how we first met, in 1988 we both joined the bond club and roomed together. thus we were known as "roomies "ever after, as "in hi roomie!". put on the best bond club new members skit ever: "saturday night live." then in 1993 both became active at the bohemian club. he was a collector of friends where ever he went.he will be missed. dan

My condolences to the entire Filter family. Jeff was indeed a well met, hail and hearty fellow. He was always up for fun, lived life, and I never knew him to miss a special moment, especially in the Redwoods. God bless you all. RIP Jeff.

To the entire Filter family.
My deepest sympathies to all of you. Jeff was like a brother to me while growing up at Congress Lake. Later in life we were able to do a number of things together and he always made it extremely special. He will always be in my thoughts. A true American patriot.

Jeff just seemed to bring happiness and love to every event that I have ever attended with him. I have never laughed and enjoyed afternoons with him as well as Tags, Griffy and Nellie on SF Bond Blub outings. He was certainly one in a billion. He was a great fellow Trojan and a tremendous friend. God bless.

I had Jeff for over 20 years. We competed against each other for a number of years. He was always very professional, smart and had a wicked sense of humor. Jeff was always honest and forthright in all of our dealings. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word. Although I never had the privilege of knowing his family rest assured that your Dad and husband was one of the best. He will be missed.

Our loss is Heaven's gain...Jeff was a cheerful friend to all, loyal Trojan, SF Bond Club legend, and great family man. Furthermore, Jeff was one of my very best friends in the financial services industry and we shared a strong love of USC Trojan athletics. Sincere condolences to Vicky and the entire family. He will be greatly missed.
