Jeroen Elisabeth Jozef Knops died peacefully on December 9th 2024 at home in
San Francisco, CA. Shirley Clift, Jeroen's beloved wife of more than 36 years, and
their beautiful cats were by his side. Jeroen was born February 19th, 1956 in Leuven, Belgium; parents Léopold Knops and Lutgardis Henderickx.
Jeroen is survived by his six siblings: Klaus, Pol, Lugart, Uus, Geert and Daan and
their families, all of Belgium.
Educated at the Rega Institute for Medical Research in Leuven, Jeroen earned a
bachelor's degree. He had a distinguished career in biomedical research in Brussels
(Belgium), Heidelberg and Starnberg (Germany), Houston TX and the Bay Area,
both in academia and biotechnology.
Jeroen became a San Francisco resident in 1989 and immediately became
passionate about all things SF; Dungeness crab, Japanese culinary delicacies,
barbecued turkeys, the Giants, the Niners (master tailgater!) and so much more.
Most important to Jeroen and Shirley was their shared love of art and music. Jeroen
was an avid art collector to the very end. Their enthusiasm for music is extraordinary
- patrons of the San Francisco Symphony and Opera for over 35 years.
A fund to support young musicians and youth programs at the San Francisco
Symphony has been established in the name of Jeroen Knops. Donations can be
made to honor his legacy and passion for music by contacting the SF Symphony at
[email protected].
Jeroen will be remembered at a gathering in San Francisco; tentatively planned for
February 2025, details to be determined.

vandaag op zijn verjaardag, verneem ik jouw overlijden, Jeroen. het raakt me diep. we hebben na onze studies nog heel lang contact gehouden, veel gemailed, veel geschreven, veel gedeeld...de laatste jaren as het contact verbroken, was je ziek ? ik bewaar mooie, lieve, warme herinneringen aan jou, het ga je goed.
