Jerome Greenbaum Obituary

Jerome Jay Greenbaum, M.D. A first generation immigrant from Poland, Jerry was born to Anna Levine Greenbaum and Leonard Greenbaum on May 9, 1932 in Yonkers, New York. Jerry passed away peacefully on September 20, 2011 at age 79. The family moved from New York to San Francisco when Jerry was 12, almost qualifying him as a native Californian! Jerry received his undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley and earned the right to wear the "Big C" for his participation on the crew team, of which he was very proud. He attended UCSF School of Medicine, graduating in 1957. He was affiliated with the Permanente Medical Group specializing in Internal Medicine and Travel Medicine for 42 years, retiring in 1999. Jerry remained affiliated with the Medical Alumni Association of the UCSF School of Medicine, The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and in the International Society of Travel Medicine. Jerry is survived by his wife of 32 years, Janet Price Greenbaum, and their combined family, Jeffrey John Greenbaum (Laura) of San Mateo, Nicole Greenbaum Beckwith of Martinez, Gary Joseph Greenbaum of Cotati, and Ashley Wilson Bond of San Francisco (Ron); and their six grandchildren: Matthew and Shannon Beckwith (Nicole), Gabrielle (Gabby) and Jessica Greenbaum (Jeffrey), and Ava and Vivienne Bond (Ashley). All will miss their dad, grandpa and poppi greatly, the vision of him sitting at his computer, the multitude of sporting events on the television and his sly sense of humor. Jerry leaves behind much loved cousins and close friends here and in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, the second home of his heart. The family wishes to extend special and heartfelt thanks to Don Palustra for his loving care of Jerry for the last year and a half as well as others on the staff of Visiting Angels Living Assistance Services. Their support greatly enhanced the quality of Jerry's life and we will be forever grateful. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Sinai Memorial Chapel, 1501 Divisadero Street at Geary in San Francisco with interment following at Home of Peace Cemetery, 1299 El Camino Real in Colma.

On this anniversary, I want to add that Jerry was a superlative human being. Kind, gentle, supremely intelligent and an excellent physician. He was an innovator in medicine. Those fortunate enough to count him as a friend are and have been blessed. May he be consoled in Heaven.

I am certain that I speak for Jerry's friends and colleagues with the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM) that his sharp wit, sense and desire of community, and deep experience of Travel Medicine will be sadly missed. I remember nights out, in cities around the world, filled with discussion, wine, and laughter. Jerry, we love you and we will miss you.

Dr Jerry Greenbaum was a friend, a colleague and mentor. He was one of the original founders of the field of Travel Medicine, and his wry sense of humor, his wit, and his flair made our travel medicine and tropical medicine conferences memorable. He carried himself with great dignity and was respected immensely by his peers. Always cheery, with pinot noir in hand, and always praising Janet, Jerry Greenbaum's memory enriches the lives of all he touched. May God grant him eternal peace.

Jerry: I'll never forget the friendship and I've always marveled at your medical expertise. I was just in SF and stopped at the chapel and said goodbye, not knowing it would be you. Goodbye dear friend.
