Joane Hatcher McCall Berry

Joane Berry Obituary

Joane Hatcher McCall Berry Passed away peacefully on Thanksgiving, November 23rd, after a brief battle with cancer. She is survived by her two sons, Roderick and Ross; daughters-in-law, Robyn and Kim; and four loving grandchildren, Beatrix, Kent, Matt and Kylie. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Berry, to whom she was married for nearly 50 years; and her daughter Roxane. Joane was born in Russellville, KY, and educated at the University of Alabama where she was president of her sorority, Chi Omega. Her San Francisco-born husband brought her to Marin County in 1953 where she has since been a very active and appreciated resident. She gave so much of her time to raising her three children and was actively involved in activities such as Camp Fire Girls and the Kentfield Grade School and Redwood High School PTAs for which she was president of both. She volunteered her time to many organizations and served on the boards of Sunny Hills Services, the Marin Art and Garden Center, the William Babcock Memorial Endowment and the Foundation Board of Marin General Hospital. Many will remember Joane for her 30 years as a real estate agent for Coldwell Banker. She truly loved her work for it permitted her the opportunity to meet and help so many new and old Marin County residents. She was consistently the top sales agent in her office as well as one of her firm's top agents in Northern CA. Joane was also an adventurous traveler, always excited to explore the world. She had a true passion for life. But her greatest success was the many friendships she developed and cultivated throughout her lifetime. She will be missed by so many. A Celebration of Joane's life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in San Anselmo on Wednesday November 29th at 1:00 p.m., followed by a reception at the Marin Art and Garden Center in Ross. In lieu of flowers, it is kindly requested that remembrances be made either Sunny Hills Services, Attn: Development, 300 Sunny Hills Drive, San Anselmo, CA 94960; or to the Marin Art and Garden Center, P.O. Box 437, Ross, CA 94957.

I loved Joane! As a new agent in the Castle she was so caring and always there for me when I needed help. Never complaining and always kind and patient!!
I will never forget one day I was working on the floor and she came in dressed for the out doors and just smiling from ear to ear - and her eyes were just sparkling!! She was so excited!! I asked her "What is going on that makes you look so happy??" she replied, "I am going to the Pumpkin Patch with my grand children. And I am so excited!"
She loved her family and her grand children and appreciated every minute with them.
I will miss her presence; her smile; and her "bye" "bye" at the end of the day. She was special and my prayers and love go to her family.

I MET JOANE IN 1983 WHILE WORKING AT COLDWELL BANKER'S "CASTLE" WHEN HAROLD STROUSE WAS THE MANAGER. SHE WAS THE EPITOME OF WHAT ALL MANAGERS WANTED IN AN AGENT. BUT MORE IMPORTANT, HER FAMILY WAS TRULY BLESSED TO HAVE HAD HER AS A MOTHER.

Joane will be greatly missed by the many people she touched. She was a great inspiration--both professionally and personally. I have know Joane since 1977 when we moved to Kentfield, and can truly say that few people will even achieve her great sense of style.

I was so shocked to read of Joane's death. It doesn't seem that long ago that I saw her on tour and was greeted with her cheery "southern" hello. She was the ultimate gracious lady who, in addition, had a zany sense of humor. Everyone who came into contact with her in our industry will miss her. Of course, our sadness cannot compare to how her family must feel. My thoughts are with them. I feel blessed to have known her.

Joane was warm and gracious and elegant. She had tremendous integrity in her business and was always a pleasure to work with, someone you were always happy to see. She was someone I truly admired personally and professionally. I am deeply shocked and saddened. I hope her children and grandchildren know how respected and beloved she was, and I'm so sorry they won't have more years with her.

I only knew Joane from seeing her at the Broker's tour or open houses. She was one of the MOST gracious and friendly agents ever. She had CLASS and was nice to everyone! They really don't make them like her anymore. My thoughts and prayers to the family.

My friendship with Joane goes back 42 years, first in our Chi Omega alumnae group in Marin and then in real estate. She was kind, caring, professional, a true lady, and had a great sense of humor. Her family meant everything to her. She was so proud of her sons and grandchildren. Her death is a great loss to her family and so many people. My thoughts are with the family.

I met Joane 18 years ago when I was new in the real estate business and she was always kind and such a gracious and bright lady.

I loved seeing her at my open houses or calling her to show one of her properties.

Any interaction with Joane was a pleasure and I will miss her.

My condolences to her family. I am sorry for your loss of such a beautiful and graceful woman. It was an honor to know her.

In my business of engineering and home building for many years in Marin County....It seemed that Joane was always in and out of it for one reason or another....A client here.....A special problem to be solved there....An offer on one of our new homes when we were lucky enough to have her come forward as the buyer's agent.....A very lovely and classy lady of itellect and integrity that was always a pleasure to deal with and to associate with....A true professional in her field....But most of all.....A grand lady of our time.....In a time when being gracious and grand was more than out of fashion.....It hardly existed at all.....I have been away from Marin for a long time now..Some people I remember...Some I don't.....Joane's gracious way of going about and getting things done in that great way of hers is something I will always remember and appreciate....She will be missed by many....My sincere condolences to her family.....Joe Grippi...

My first memories of Joane are from Paul Daly days when she brought her children for swim lessons. Rod was about 8 years old, skinny as a rail and shivered his way through every session with a big smile on his face. Later, of course, while I was teaching Spanish at Redwood High, Joane was active in the PTSA and Rod became the best distance runner in Redwood history. She was a charming and gracious lady, always cordial, very classy and always greeted me as though we were life long friends. Her impression on me is indelible and her legacy is one that, I am sure, will always make her family proud.
