John Dpm Obituary

John Ziomek DPM
October 13, 1954 - January 6, 2024
Dr. John Ziomek passed away unexpectedly in Long Beach. Born in Bremerhaven, Germany to Major Edward and Eileen Ziomek, John was the fourth of five children. After his father retired from the Army, the family moved back in 1962 to his mother's birthplace, San Francisco. A resident of Visitacion Valley, John attended St. Elizabeth's Grammar School (1968) and Sacred Heart High School (1972). Outside of school, John participated in football, became an Eagle Scout and worked at Caesars' Restaurant in North Beach.
After high school, John first attended City College of San Francisco, before being accepted into U.C. Berkeley, where he completed his degree in 1978 in Nutrition, Food Science, and Dietetics. That degree led to his acceptance into the Doctoral Program in Podiatric Medicine at CCPM where he was awarded the National Health Services Corps (NHSC) Scholarship, which exists to fulfill the goal of placing doctors in areas of healthcare shortages. The area he selected was San Luis Obispo County, which became his family home for the remainder of his life.
In 1982, John opened up his podiatry practice in Arroyo Grande. At the Five Cities Foot Clinic, Dr. Ziomek served thousands of patients throughout SLO County. Dr. Ziomek also worked as a contractor in the State Prison system and in later years had attending privileges at over 20 nursing homes in California in addition to attending to patients at his office.
It was at his office he met Kelly O'Brien and they raised three children, Johnny, Janice and Kelsey. Although that marriage ended when the children were in their teens, John and Kelly maintained a supportive relationship, both working to raise happy, productive adults.
In 2013, John met Cynthia Cole a college admissions advisor, and after a few years of dating married in Pismo Beach in 2017. In their final year together, John was primary caregiver in his love and support for Cindy who succumbed to cancer.
During his 42 years on the Central Coast, John was an active member of the community. John served as a Grover Beach Planning Commissioner, member of the Elks Lodge; the Knights of Columbus, and a founding member of the 5 Cities Men's Club.
At the time of John's death, John was living his best life - going on regular cruises with Penny Petris-Hall, and her son, Shelby.
John is survived by his three children, Johnny, Janice and Kelsey; along with siblings, Eileen Aicardi (Dennis), Mary Ellen Davis (Hank), Edward Jr. Ziomek (Costanza), Nancy Lacsamana (Lory); nieces and nephews; and his devoted girlfriend, Penny; and Shelby. He will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 23, 12:00 to 4:00 p.m., South San Francisco Basque Center. Please RSVP to [email protected] so we can plan for those attending.

I wish I could have attended his Celebration of Life, but his team mates from Sacred Heart did a wonderful job of representing those who knew him.

I admired his life and wonderful family he had. He lived a full and wonderful life and he will be missed.

May he Rest In Peace.

You were my classmate and teammate at Sacred Heart, but more importantly you became my good Friend. Always enjoyed getting a call from you on your way up from Arroyo Grande or coming back from your latest adventure. Going to miss you #75, you're probably planning that reunion game with Pops, Mooch, Bishop and Toeiena. Love yuu John, RIP.
