John McManus Obituary

John (Jack) James McManus
05/27/1937 - 07/21/2025
John J. McManus passed away peacefully on July 21, 2025 at the age of 88. Born on May 27, 1937, in San Francisco to Irish immigrant John F. McManus and Nona Coleman, Jack was proud of his 100% Irish heritage – a legacy he cherished and carried with him though out his life.
Jack is survived by his loving wife, Judith Day McManus, with whom he shared many years of love, laughter, and companionship. He was a devoted father to his daughters, Kerry McManus-Morgan (Michael) and Pamela Day-Cavagnaro (Robert). Jack (Papa to the girls) was especially proud of his four granddaughters-Lauren Morgan (32), Daniela Cavagnaro (30), Jenna Morgan (28), and Lexi Cavagnaro (27) – who were the light of his life and brought him endless joy. He adored them and treasured every moment spent with them.
He was preceded in death by his parents, who instilled in him a deep appreciation for family, hard work, and tradition.
Jack graduated from Riordan High School in San Francisco in 1956 and proudly served in the United States Navy for two years. Following his military service, he earned his associate degree from San Mateo Community College in Plumbing and started his career as a plumber in San Mateo. Jack later joined the San Francisco Fire Department, where he dedicated 30 years of service, spending much of his time at Engine 28 and at the San Francisco Airport division. He played a vital role in the department's fireboat water search and rescue operations, exemplifying his lifelong commitment to protecting others.
Jack had a lifelong love for Clear Lake, California, which he considered his favorite place in the world. Every summer, he could be found waterskiing on its serene waters, making cherished memories with family and friends. He was a longtime member of Berkeley Aquatic Park Waterski Club, where he practiced slalom skiing. He was also a regular swimmer in the San Francisco Bay, braving the cold waters with the same fearless energy he brought to everything he did.
In addition to his time in Clear Lake, Jack spent several years sailing, fishing, and scuba diving around the Sea of Cortez in Mexico, His adventurous spirit took him on many unforgettable journeys as he explored the beauty of the sea, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
Jack was a champion waterski speed skier and slalom water skier, earning numerous medals in both national and regional championships. He participated many times in the Catalina Speed Ski Race, proudly competing on his Maherajah speed ski – a testament to his love for the sport and fearless spirit.
He was also an avid snow skier, lifelong 49er fan, and in his later years, discovered a new passion for golf. You could find Jack on the golf course nearly every day, enjoying the game, the outdoors, and the camaraderie that came with it. During the spring months, he spent time in Palm Springs, then headed to Florida, soaking up the sun, waterskiing, enjoying family, and of course, playing as many rounds of golf as he could with good friends.
Jack also had a life long passion for collecting and restoring classic boats and cars. He took great pride in his restorations and enjoyed showing them at events throughout the years.
Jack never met a stranger and was truly everyone's best friend. He had a way of making people feel welcome, valued, and at home. He was always the life of the party, with the biggest smile that lit up every room. His warmth, humor, and generous spirit left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Jack was a devoted member of Our Lady of Angeles Catholic Church in Burlingame, where he attended mass weekly and drew great strength from his faith.
In Lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Jacks memory to: Our Lady Of Angels Catholic Church, 1721 Hillside Drive, Burlingame, Ca 94010.
Or San Francisco Fire Fighters Cancer Prevention Foundation, 1139 Mission Street, San Francisco, Ca 94103.
A celebration Of Jack's Life will be held on Friday, October 17th from 2pm-6pm at Buckingham Homeowner's Association 2850, Eastlake Dr., Kelseyville, Ca 95451
Jack will be remembered for his Irish wit, generous heart, athletic spirit, love for Clear Lake, the Sea of Cortez, Florida, and his deep devotion to family, faith, and friendship. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched..

I met Jack in 1974 being detailed from 2 Tk to 28 Eng. I got to know he and Judy over the years. My heart goes out to Judy. They were together for many years. He was a great guy and a great Fireman.
I am happy that he had such a long and active run.
God Bless Jack. Rest in peace Brother

I met Jack March 18th 1968 at the drill tower. I knew instantly he was going to be a great friend for the rest of our lives. So many laughs and stories. Our careers in the SFFD crossed paths many times. North Beach became our second homes. Jack at 28 E and myself at 2 T. Luckily Lenny Venturi and myself spent a day with Jack and Judy a few months ago. More laughs and stories. RIP Jack. You are the best, and I hope we meet somewhere on the other side.

I worked with Jack at Sta. 28 in the early 70's and would run into him almost every year at the Lake Tahoe Woody Boat Show where he proudly displayed a beautifully restored '39 Chris Craft "Annabelle" which seemed to win in it's class almost every year. Always a pleasure to run into him & reminisce on times & people past.

Jack was the nicest person I have ever known. Met him in the 70´s. His wife Judy is one of my oldest friends. We used to go to her moms house at Christmas-Annabelle Graff -and I remember how fun Jack was. Laughs all the time when he was around! Also went to their home in Clear Lake a few times. May he rest in peace. Love, Gretchen and Ken
