Joseph Conway Obituary

Joseph Conway In the company of those he loved the most, dad passed away on February 7, 2006 after a valiant battle with lung cancer. Enjoying his family until the very last moment, and gracing us with his well known wit until the end; he leaves behind his wife and best friend of 51 years, Peggy; two daughters, Maureen and Kathleen; two sons and best buddies, Joey and Daniel, and their wives Robin and Eileen. He was the best Grampa ever with his nine adoring grandchildren: Kathleen, Mary and Jeannie O'Rourke; Shannon, Laura, Charlie and Angeline Kelly; and the two newest babies who brought him so much joy this past year, Joseph Conway and Danny Conway. He is survived by his loving in-laws Nancy Hole and Betty and Bill Bennett. Rounding out his large and loving family are all the Cullen, Bennett and Hutton cousins as well as his Conway cousins in Ireland. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Florence Conway; beloved sister, Eileen Conway Cullen; brother-in-law, Jack Cullen; and first cousins, Jay and Lee Wormser. He also leaves behind many longtime and loyal friends who brightened his days this past year with cards, letters and phone calls. Born in S.F., September 28, 1926, Dad attended St. Cecilia's Grammar School and St. Ignatius High School. After returning from Army Service in occupied Japan he attended and graduated from the University of S.F. earning a bachelors degree and a masters degree in education. Starting as a teacher at Everett Jr. High in S.F. he rose through the ranks and retired after more than 30 years with the Jefferson Union High School District, as principal of Terra Nova High School in Pacifica. Of all things in his life, dad's family was the most important to him and the biggest source of joy. He was so proud of his Irish heritage and of being a native San Franciscan. Our favorite times were spent together at our home in Hacienda on the Russian River sitting on the porch telling stories, always with lots and lots of laughs. Friends are invited to visit at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 10, 2006 with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. at SNEIDER AND SULLIVAN FUNERAL HOME, 977 So. El Camino Real in San Mateo. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 11, 2006 at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, 300 Alameda de las Pulgas in San Mateo. Donations in Joe's name to Lucille Packard Children's Hospital, Stanford Hospital, 770 Welch Road, Palo Alto, CA 94304 or Mission Hospice, 151 West 20th Ave., San Mateo, CA 94403 preferred.

Peggy and Family, Just heard of Joe's passing from Shirley Ribera. What a grand guy he was; we shared more than a few laughs with him over the years. A good husband, father, grandfather - and educational leader. His life a legacy! Promise of prayers.

On St Patrick's Day there was always a huge Irish flag in front of the Conway home and we would know Joe was celebrating life. He brought a vitality to our neighborhood, always greeting people on his walks and bringing intelligence and wit to whatever the topic of discussion was. His knowledge of politics, pets, acadamia ( Georgetown University tuition rates!) made the conversations most interesting. In later years, he was accompanied by little Lexie and we knew he had yet another admirer. Our neighborhood will never be the same, but we feel fortunate to have known Joe, heard his laughter and see his inspiring legacy continue in the Conway family.

Joe was a wonderful man who always added laughter to all of our family get togethers. He was dedicated to his family and friends. He cheered on his friends children during sporting events even though he was the principal for the oposing team. He will be dearly missed.

Dear Peggy and Family:

We are deeply sadden to learn the passing of your husband Joe. It has been many years since we have seen each other since the good old days on St.Catherine Drive. We have so many good memories of our families growing up together. May he rest in peace. God Bless.

Joe Conway was a great guy who never failed to make me laugh each time we met. Thankfully, his great sense of humor and fun live on in his wife, children, and grandchildren. He had a great family and a great and full life. I will never forget him.
