JOSEPH MARCHI Obituary

Joseph J. Marchi A much-loved Joseph J. Marchi left this world for "somewhere over the rainbow" on April 3, 2012, after a year-long battle with cancer. He leaves behind his wife Carol, his sons Joe (Laura) and David (Jim), granddaughters Ashley and Angelica, and brother Jack (Mary). Born on May 31, 1930, to San Francisco natives Geronima (Cavallero) and Ugo Marchi, Joe graduated from Mission High School and SF State and earned a Masters Degree from Columbia. His lifelong love of teaching began with English and continued with impassioned and popular programs on American Musical Theatre on campuses and social centers across the Bay Area. Joe loved family, friends, flowers, pasta, travel, theatre, music, and literature. He left his earthly dwelling with a heart full of gratitude, believing that God had given him a rich and beautiful life. All are invited to attend a Visitation Service on Tuesday, April 10, at 7:00 PM and a Memorial Mass on Wednesday, April 11, at 11:00 A.M., both at St. Bartholomew's Church, 600 Columbia Drive/Alameda/Crystal Springs Road in San Mateo. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Anthony's Dining Room, St. Bartholomew's Building Fund, or a charity of your choice. Our special thanks to St. Bart's Parish Community and Sutter VNA and Hospice for their loving support.

I have just read of the death of Jospeh Marchi. Mr. Marchi was my guidance counselor at Aragon High back in the early 1960´s. I´ve spent quite a bit of time in schools, both as a student and as a teacher; Mr. Marchi is a teacher whom I came to know personally and whom I have remembered as an example for my own teaching life. throughout my own 40-year career as a teacher, first at Groton Scholl. His example and his friendship was one of the guiding factors guiding me in my own 40-year teaching career, and his example of what it means to be a true human being has stayed with me throughout my own 40-year career as a teacher I am deeply grateful for his friendship and his example.

I met Joe at a performance at the Sequoias in Portola Valley and then hired him to perform at IHM in Belmont. Terrific guy!

I often said I would walk across the Country to sit in one of Joe"s sessions. His enthusiasm and charisma was contagious, and his genuine good nature glowed. He will live on in many hearts.

We so enjoyed every presentation from Joe when he spoke at Elderhostel. We were definitely his "groupies" and attended every session he led that would also fit our schedules. A true treasure who will be sorely missed.

Dear Carol and family,
It's hard to understand why people are taken from us. Hold on to your memories and let them guide you during this time of sadness. Joe and I have been friends all through school and college, and have been in touch ever since. It is a pleasure to have him Godfather to my daughter Jean Marie. I am sorry for your loss, and I will miss him immensely!

Carol, Joe and David,
I am sorry for your loss and know my thoughts and prayers are with you. It seems like yesterday we were neighbors and laughing with Joe about his latest trip to Italy. He had such a wonderful laugh!! His love and support for the arts (especially theatre) left a lasting impression on me and many others.

It was such a pleasure to work with Joe on his show "Regards to Broadway" at Pacifica Community TV. He was always professional, pleasant, caring, and appreciative of all of our efforts. I always looked forward to his working on his show and now always think of Joe whenever the topics of live theatre, Broadway, Judy Garland come up. Oh, and Mamma Mia and Tuvan throat singers! We had some really good times. Blessings to the family, thank you for sharing him with us.
