Joe, a breath of life and culture during arid MSU days — you introduced me to “Mary Hartman”, Bette Midler, and De Niro (literally). We saw Jaws on opening day, and conquered Hollywood together. It all ended too soon. Be proud McGee family! You nurtured a real original, kind to others and true to himself.

I met Joe my freshman year at Michigan State University. My sister, Marcia, spotted him right away. He was the coolest guy in the cafeteria. Joe taught me about beauty. He was a great lover of life and art. He was so smart and knew about all the issues, political and cultural. Joe taught me so much about life. He was a real inspiration to me intellectually. We shared many happy memories at MSU and later in Marblehead, Hollywood, and San Fransisco. Joe was like an uncle to my daughter, Claire. So kind and generous and helpful to her when she moved to SF. The last time I saw Joe was when I was visiting SF this past April. He looked great. Had a new haircut and as always was dressed impeccably. We met at Bi-Rite for ice cream. We had seconds.

RIP Joe. I can't believe we are having to say goodbye to you so soon. I hope and pray that you are reunited with your mom now--she has been missed for far too long and I'm sure she is sad for your premature departure from our lives, yet happy to have you by her side once again. From our first meeting, I could feel a family connection to you. I've always felt very fortunate to have gained another brother in my life. I'm so happy to have shared a special relationship with you. You were always so present, caring, and dedicated to your family. I will always cherish all of our adventures and memories. So many great ones!!! You were a perfect brother for Kevin!- as he was to you. You both GOT each other! He truly appreciated your uniqueness, and loved you unconditionally. As stated by your friends, you were extraordinary!! Life wasn't easy for you the past couple of years, and I am sorry for your pain, but we will all remember the strong, involved, fun-loving Joe. You will forever be in our hearts. Love you more than words can express. See you again someday. Sandy
