Judy C. Webb passed away on February 17, 2024, peacefully at home, with her three adult children by her bedside. She was 85. Judy will be remembered for her love of and unwavering devotion to family and friends, boundless energy, passion for adventure, appreciation of humor, and her infectious laughter.
Born on May 23, 1938, in Los Angeles, Calif., Judy attended the Marlborough School for Girls, graduating in 1956. She earned a B.A. in History from UC Berkeley in 1960, spending her junior year abroad in Vienna, Austria.
In 1961, Judy married her first husband, Sam Haskins, in Rome, Italy. They had three children together, lived in San Francisco, and later moved to Belvedere, Calif., in 1968. Judy married John M. Webb at Old St. Hilary's Church in Tiburon, Calif., in January 1986. John predeceased her in 2002.
Judy was very active in her children's lives as they grew up, and she worked full-time while also becoming an integral part of the local community in Belvedere-Tiburon.
Judy loved the Bay Area and all it has to offer. She could often be found swimming at the Tiburon Peninsula Club or in the Belvedere Lagoon, boating on the Bay, visiting art museums, or hosting family and friends in Belvedere or the Napa Valley. One of her proudest swimming achievements was completing the RCP Tiburon Mile at 71 with her oldest son, Scott. She not only finished first in her age group, but she was also crowned the oldest person to complete the Angel Island-to-Tiburon open water swim.
Judy was president of Lothrop Ventures, Inc., a real estate development company she formed in the late 1980s. Through Lothrop, she built storage facilities, single-family homes, and office properties in the Bay Area. Later in life, Judy turned her focus to civic involvement and approached it with her characteristic enthusiasm.
She was a passionate supporter of UC Berkeley. Some of her longest and closest friendships began at the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority house at Cal. She remained involved with UC Berkeley, where she served on the College of Letters and Science Advisory Board and Executive Board, was a trustee for the UC Berkeley Foundation, and was a member of the University Library Board.
In an event that perhaps culminated her involvement at Cal, Judy attended the Nobel prize ceremony in Sweden, due to her support of UC Berkeley professor, George Smoot, Nobel Prize winner in physics in 2006.
Judy served on several boards of cultural institutions in the Bay Area and beyond. At SFMOMA, she was a volunteer docent before becoming docent president, and then a trustee at the museum. She was also a trustee at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, and later served as chair of the college's board. She was a trustee at the National Tropical Botanical Garden and an active supporter of the Belvedere-Tiburon Library and the San Francisco Symphony.
She loved to travel and visited as many art and history museums as time allowed. She also enjoyed studying foreign languages, including French and German, and she was fluent in Spanish. An ardent reader, Judy was active in her cherished book club until the end of her life.
It brought Judy great joy to see her grandchildren grow into young adults. She relished in their every adventure and quizzed them often about activities, classes, and interests.
Judy is survived by her children, Scott Haskins (Timmie), Eliza Koeppel (Michael), and John Haskins (Gala); grandchildren, Amanda Koeppel, Olivia Koeppel, Jade Haskins, Lucia Haskins, and Ananda Haskins; stepchildren, Suzanne Webb, John M. Webb, Jr., Kim Webb, and Belynda Webb; and step-grandchildren, James Webb, Jason Webb, Brandon Webb, and Emmett Marks.
The family is grateful to Judy's doctors and caregivers. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to By the Bay Health (Hospice), UC Berkeley Foundation, or the National Tropical Botanical Garden.
