June Cunningham Obituary
June Forsburg Cunningham
06/29/1930 - 08/26/2025
June Forsburg Cunningham, a beloved longtime resident of Orinda, passed away peacefully in Walnut Creek on August 26, 2025, at the age of 95.
Born on June 29, 1930, in Alameda, California, June was the daughter of Frank E. Forsburg Sr. and Mildred Mercy (Meyer) Forsburg. She grew up in Kensington with her older brother Frank Jr. and younger sister Ann, enjoying a childhood filled with family, community, and the outdoors. She attended Anna Head's School, where she made many lifelong friendships.
June attended Cal, she was active in Chi Omega Sorority. There she met John Lindsay "Jack" Cunningham, and in 1950 married. Together they built their home in Orinda, where she lived for more than 60 years. They shared 51 years of marriage and raised four children-Patricia Nichols, Anne McConnen, Jean Rowe (Lawrence), and John Lindsay Cunningham III (Debra). June delighted in being at the center of a lively, close-knit family including her grandchildren-Mary, Katherine, John, and Megan-who brought her joy in every stage of life.
Gardening was always a large part of June's life. She and Jack worked tirelessly on their Orinda garden, which was always a joy to visit. She was a longtime member of the Orinda Garden Club and cherished the life-long friendships she made through the club. She was a consummate volunteer, actively participating in many gardening projects and fundraising activities. She was always ready to take on projects and often leading them. She also enjoyed working on the computer-particularly the creative aspects of desktop publishing.
When Jack was active on the Gardens at Heather Farm board, June was by his side, assisting in fundraising activities. She put everything into these projects, often coming up with new ideas. She was definitely a leader- she knew what she wanted, but always made the process fun.
June enjoyed traveling. When younger, June and Jack took annual camping trips with their children. Later, after the children were older, they began to travel to see the world. They visited many countries on six continents and enjoyed learning about the people, food, culture, and sights.
June will be remembered for her warmth, sense of humor, her keen mind, and the way she welcomed others into her circle. In later years, she enjoyed bridge, a game that combined her sharp mind with her gift for companionship. She was always in the kitchen cooking, sharing her creations with friends and family. June was a gracious hostess, whether for a small dinner party, family gathering or a large fundraising event.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jack, her brother Frank, and her sister Ann. She is survived by her four children, four grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends who will carry her memory forward.
A funeral Mass will be held at Santa Maria Church (Orinda) on October 10 at 9:45. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Orinda Garden Club or The Gardens at Heather Farm (Walnut Creek).
