"SPREAD THE JOY"
1967 - 2013
Our beloved Justin died of esophageal cancer on August 28, 2013, at age 45. Justin was a beautiful free spirit, an extreme athlete, a master craftsman, a fearless adventurer, a manufacturer of joy and love which he spread around the world. He was known for his wide smile and never-ending generosity, and shared a special relationship with nature and animals. Justin lived in Aspen, Colorado, and Bali, Indonesia, where he recreated his architectural masterpiece, a 100+ year old "Joglo," which he had moved from Jakarta to Bali.
Justin's charisma, smile and joy will always remain with his loving family: His proud Mom, Marcia Doty; his brother, Jason Doty of Denver, CO; his sisters, Christa Kilk (Arnie) also of Denver, and Colleen Riordan of Jackson, CA. His nephew, Hunter Riordan, and nieces, Mackenzie and Makayla Kilk, and Mia Riordan have many memories of FUN with Uncle Justin. He was preceded in death by his Father, John Alden Doty. He will also be missed by his stepfather, Fred Sherman, and family (Mark, Susan, Miley and Hayes Sherman), Aunt Gail and Uncle Bob Boll of Charlotte, NC, and Aunt Audrey Behrenhoff of Seattle, WA, and family.
Our family wishes to thank all Justin's friends from Notre Dame des Victoires Grammar School, St. Ignatius and Washington High Schools, Santa Barbara Community College, and all those who attended benefits for him in Aspen and San Francisco, and supported Justin with so many acts of kindness. We are especially grateful to Justin's dear friend, Harmony Scott. A Celebration of Justin's life will be held, at his request, on the top of Aspen Mountain on September 29th, 2013, 4-7pm. The family will also celebrate Justin's infectious spirit at Lake Tahoe with a special hike and picnic.
Gifts of remembrance can be made to the Hospice or charity of your choice.
The following reflects the life of Justin and what he would want from us:
When I die, if you weep, cry for the homeless person walking in the street beside you.
And when you need me, put your arms around another and give them what you thought you needed from me.
You can love me most by sharing your blessings and multiplying your contribution to the world.
You can love me by spreading goodness.
You can love me most by letting me live in your eyes and not in your mind.
And when you say prayers for me, remember,
Love doesn't die, people do.
So when all that's left of me is love,
Give me away.

We first met Justin when he was four years old. At that time his father, John, was alive and well and the Doty's
lived next door to us in the Richmond District. The Doty children were a lively bunch and they were fine neighbors.
It is now late 2016 and we have just learned of dear Justin's untimely passing. For his Mom, sisters and brother, we
send our deepest regrets and loving sympathy for their loss. Justin's life is finished here but his spirit lives on in his
every venture while here. God speed, Justin...

I hadn't seen Justin in many years but I would recognize that ready smile anywhere, and can hear the hearty laugh that always accompanied it. God bless you and keep you, Justin.

Words are too simple to describe Justin and the energy that he was...I will miss that energy and the bear hug that went with it! Saying I will miss him just doesn't seem sufficient...but words are all I have to work with...I will miss you, Justin!
