Kathleen Bartlett Obituary

Kathleen Bartlett
12/30/1949 - 07/11/2024
Kathleen Bartlett, a nurse and friend beloved to countless people in the Bay Area and beyond, died on July 11 in San Francisco. She was 74.
Kathy was full of zest, someone who reveled and invested in community-across languages, generations, and backgrounds-as though it were her job. In a way that endeared her to people in minutes and for decades, she paired a mordant sense of humor with unflagging compassion and interest in others. She was the confidante who'd bring buttered toast to a depressed friend every single day until the sadness lifted, enliven the birthday parties of people forty years younger, and knit a three-foot-tall monster, complete with backpack and scarf, for a grand-niece.
As nurse, she cared for Vietnamese refugees at Camp Pendleton and visited the homes of patients in the Tenderloin before starting a 27-year-career at the San Francisco VA Hospital. There, she was the charge nurse for the Infectious Disease Clinic through the harrowing early era of the HIV pandemic. This was followed by years managing infection control for the hospital, where her work spanned everything from sanitizing deadly prions from an operating room to tracking down syphilis cases. Colleagues remember her as a critical thinker who shared expertise with clarity, humor, and pragmatism.
Kathy is survived by her husband Peter Shypertt and by two siblings, Jean and Bob Bartlett. Peter and Kathy met as volunteers chopping vegetables and dishing out soup from 20-gallon pots at a homeless shelter. Both were legendary for the dinner parties they hosted, events that could last many hours and feel like a holiday unto themselves. They welcomed others into their home for far longer periods too, hosting exchange students and friends (and friends once or twice removed!) for weeks and months. They became like family to tenants.
Kathy will be missed by the neighbors whom she bound together, loved ones around the country and across the globe, and coworkers who've since become longstanding friends. She'll be missed in the Berkeley garden where without fail, she pulled weeds and cultivated flowers twice weekly for years. Most of all, she'll be missed by her family. She leaves behind a Kathy-shaped hole in the worlds of many. She also leaves behind a wealth of joyful memories.

Kathy was my true friend born out of our working together at the VA, she a nurse and me a Social Worker. We had many funny stories about our experiences there told from our warped but necessary sense of humor while dealing with the suffering we came across. Our friendship continued after I left the VA and she eventually retired with weekly early morning walks in "the burbs" where I live. We shared our view of the world, our feelings, thoughts and hopes and dreams for many years. I hold my time with Kathy in my heart for I know it to be special and timeless.

Working with Kathy was always a joy, except my stomach always hurt after from laughing so hard. She was a wonderful nurse and so funny.

Her famous New Year´s trifle will be remembered by all the Collins´ Family; but even more, than the delicious dessert, we will remember Kathy´s warmth and friendliness.

Kathy was a wonderful friend. Warm, vivacious, down-to-earth, and lots of fun. We connected over family care-giving and she was always willing to share her deeply informed nursing advise, which I valued above all others.
Even after her parents died, she continued to visit her parents' friends, because she showed up for people. I will miss her terribly.

I met Cathy over decades of years at my mother´s for New Year´s Eve parties hosted by my sister. She always generously brought her Trifle dessert to share. She was friendly and engaging. She shared the rewards she received from helping her patients at the Veterans Medical Center in SF. She exhibited joy.

I thought of Kathy over the years and wondered how she was. We were childhood friends....classmates in grammar school (St. Dunstan's in Millbrae, Ca.) and high school (Mercy in Burlingame, Ca). We doubled to the Soph Hop....my brother was her date. Ah....such silly, fun times! How amazing that she became such an empathetic powerhouse and so beloved! Truly....a life well lived!

Kathy was simply one of my very favorite colleagues ever, the best anyone could ever hope for. We worked together at the DVAMC-SF ID Clinic back in the early days of the AIDS/HIV epidemic.
The work was demanding and stressful: Everyone had to do their part, because our patients rightfully required all our attention.
Kathy was the anchor who kept us focused on them and each other, not on ourselves. We all loved her, but we also feared her a little too. Although she always led with compassion, she also didn't suffer fools even remotely gladly.
Indeed, she was the best at setting appropriate boundaries that I have ever seen. Patients, residents, attendings, impertinent young researchers such as myself all got told when we'd crossed the line. I never, ever forgot the lessons she dished out. She is a cherished role model for me, even now.
In addition, she had a scorchingly dry sense of humor. Her brilliant commentary and comedic riffs often left us collapsing in laughter. She would think up morale-boosting diversions, asking everyone to bring in their baby pictures: The person who correctly matched all colleagues to their pediatric selves would win a cake that Kathy baked. Only one of us got it right. Kathy outwitted us all and got to keep her cake and eat it too.
Kathy, thanks for everything. I miss you more than I can say. Your name will be for a blessing for the ages.
