Kenneth Manuel Obituary

Kenneth P. Manuel

June 30, 1945 – May 22, 2019

Ken was born in Hayward, California on June 30, 1945, and grew up and lived his formative years in Niles (Fremont), California. He graduated from James Logan High School in Union City where he lettered in track and field and served as Senior Class President. Ken received his BA from San Jose State University in political science, and did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Although he was a banker for many years, his real calling and passion was as an educator. He taught fifth grade in Suisun and Fairfield for over twenty years. He wanted his kids to know there were possibilities in front of them, that even if their families were recent immigrants, or economically challenged, or faced hardship in any way, he believed in them and would help them achieve their goals. He wore shirts with the names of different colleges on them in the classroom each day. He did this to familiarize his kids all the different colleges, and to provoke questions from them about where the campuses were located, what they specialized in and how they might one day attend one of these schools. He was deeply influenced and impacted by his own teachers and wanted to give back. After his retirement he continued to volunteer in the classroom.

Ken was proud of his family's immigrant roots; his grandparents, Jesus and Sebastiana Delgado and Jose and Teresa Manuel, his parents, Louis and Julia Manuel. He has an older brother Phillip, a sister Laurie, and Laurie's partner Beth Hoffman, who he considered a sister. He loved his many cousins; the Bragg family, the Noethers/Manuels, the Perrys, and the Delgados. Even though they may not have seen each other regularly over the years, Ken held all of his longtime friends, those he grew up with, in his heart. He had a wonderful community of colleagues, who were more than friends but extended family, Marilee, Stephanie, and Joy. Chester, his beloved cat, was a special part of his life.

Ken was an amazing son, a good friend, and a kind and gentle man who cared deeply for social justice. He served in Viet Nam but was fiercely opposed to war. He loved his country deeply and always wanted us to do better, to be better.

He believed he had been given much in his life and because of that, he needed to give back and he did so in so many ways as a quiet activist.

He proudly served on the Board of his teacher's union and was a proud liberal Democrat his entire life.

He loved animals and would adopt any homeless animal that came into his life.

His life was guided by fairness, compassion, and empathy. His love was unconditional, and his generosity was unlimited. He gave to so many animal organizations but none more than Giving Hope, a holiday program in Fremont for disabled and low-income seniors with animal companions.

He loved 50's/60's music but no British Invasion, 50's B monster movies like "Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers", and goofy early TV comedies, especially "I Love Lucy". He loved sports, mostly baseball and the Oakland A's. He was clever, funny, and his annual winning streak at the family holiday Jeopardy tournament are evidence of the level of his smarts He read everything from Shakespeare to Harry Potter to Perry Mason.

He was the perfect big brother. He took me, his sister Laurie, to Disneyland for my 12th birthday, gave me my first "real" baseball glove, taught me to drive a stick shift, and took me as an 8-year-old with him to his college campus for a visit and maybe a bit of indoctrination.

He would tell you proudly and without hesitation he was from Niles, CA. With his loss, Niles has lost a little piece of its soul. In lieu of flowers, he would want you to VOTE. In addition, any donation to Cat Town in Oakland, Furry Friends in Fremont, or any animal organization in Fairfield, Ca. is appreciated.

We will honor and celebrate his life on Sunday, June 9 at 4 pm. Please call Fremont Chapel of the Roses for more details, 510-797-1900.

Ken Manuel was a fellow classmate from Niles Elementary School and James Logan High School.

The teachers and faculty of our youth were often times veterans of World War II who achieved their teaching credentials through the benefits of the G.I. Bill.

Their stories and dedication inspired many of their students to carry the lessons taught into adulthood.

It is obvious that Ken Manuel followed their example by carrying their stories and dedication into his own wonderful legacy.

Rest in Peace Ken. You are not forgotten.

Ken taught both of my daughters in the 5th grade. We loved him! He was such a great teacher. He really made the students think. He challenged them each and every day. I'm so sorry for your loss. It breaks my heart to hear about his passing.

Mr. Manuel was one of my favorite teachers! Anytime I was in town I would try to go visit him before he retired. He was an awesome teacher that was tough when needed but really cared for us to learn. I remember building robots and disecting pigs. Fifth grade was one of my favorite because of him. He even gave me a gift before I left for Air Force basic training. He will be greatly missed!

MR. Manuel was both of my boys teacher at Suisun Elementary. To keep it simple ~ Now that the boys are 30 and 33 not all teachers are remembered. Mr. Manuel is one we remember and will always cherish that our paths have crossed. Condolences to the family.

Walking their daily path towards Niles Elementary School, neighborhood Third Street kids relished in the abundance of fruit and nut trees along the way. Remnants of the past, apricots, pears, oranges, lemons, walnuts, loquat, pomegranate and even an enormous mini-coconut tree at the Boliba residence. The Manuel residence was on Third Street, nearly in the center of this Garden of Eden.

It was during a 1956 Niles Elementary School student body assembly. Fond memories of Kenny Manuel standing up on stage of the school auditorium playing his version of Jim Lowe's 1956 tune Green Door on his accordion. An accordion one may ask? Yep, for sure. Kenny nailed it!

That tune was among many popular 45-RPM records of the mid 1950's played at the Niles Teen Club, upstairs, above the Niles Garden Basket.

From one veteran to another, saluting your service to your country during the Vietnam conflict. Welcome Home Brother.

Kenneth Paul Manuel a true Niles California native son. Sincere condolences to the entire Manuel family and friends.

Descanse en Paz.
Rest in Peace.

I will always remember Kenny. I even wore his varsity sweater for a few days back in high school. I remember him at Niles Teen Club every Wednesday night. And dancing in the Dowen garage on Friday nights with the Duarte Twins. When I got divorced and was having a horrible day, I called Kenny and he came over immediately. It was on Christmas! Who drops everything on Christmas to come cheer up and old girl friend? Kenny, that's who. I am so sorry for the loss. Save me a dance in heaven Kenny. Until then, I will miss you.

We have been saddened by the loss of my cousin, Kenny. Our families shared many memories and traditions that have been a special part of my life. His life of "fairness, compassion and empathy" is a lasting tribute that we will always remember. My prayers are with you, Kenny. May you rest in peace. Jim and Kathy Noether and family.

I am so sorry to hear this. Kenny was a good old friend. I went to prom with Kenny and he helped me with my homework.
We had a great circle of friends who would come over every weekend and dance in my garage. He was the smartest of our group. My parents adored him.
Rip my old friend and thanks for the memories
