Kevin Wong Obituary

Kevin Brian Wong

January 21, 1956 - November 3, 2014

Kevin Wong, 58, passed away peacefully at home with his family at his side. Beloved husband of Jeanette Haslam Wong, devoted & proud father of Cameron and Corinne. Kevin fought this dreadful cancer for 5 years with every ounce of courage, tenacity, and grace. He was not angry, he never asked "why me?" but accepted his journey with honor and bravery. He showed us how to live and how to die – he was more than a wonderful man; he is our hero and he will ALWAYS be in our hearts. Kevin was predeceased by his parents Richard and Florence Wong. He is survived by his siblings, Kelley Kirst (Tony), Kathleen Wilson (Evan), and Colin (Valerie). In addition, he leaves behind his mother-in-law Eugenia Haslam, and sisters-in-laws Katherine Fahd (Taha), Nanette Smith (Rod), and Jacqueline Reynolds (Ron). Many nieces and nephews will miss his smile forever. Kevin grew up in Richmond, CA until high school when his family moved to Moraga, CA. Following his graduation from Cal, he pursued his love of tennis by teaching at Cal and in Germany. Upon his return he took a job in automotive sales at Ron Goode Toyota in Alameda, CA – a job he intended to do for a few months to earn enough money to allow him to take time off to play more tennis. Instead, it was the beginning of his lifetime career. His outgoing and friendly manner proved to be a successful combination in the auto sales business and he quickly became a top salesman. He worked through the ranks at Ron Goode Toyota and remained there for more than 30 years. He stepped out of the business to enjoy time with family until Downtown Toyota & Subaru of Oakland came calling. He was the General Sales Manager/Advisor for the last 7 years. The employees that worked for him and his customers were his extended family. He was a unique car salesman; he still did business with customers from 40 years ago. He was invited to customers' birthdays, weddings, and other family celebrations. He was honest, respectful, and generous and had a keen sense of humor. For Kevin, there was nothing better than a day on the courts with friends, watching a Giants game, spending time with dear friends, and anything that involved Cameron, Corinne or Jeanette. He was famous for bringing pink boxes to events – the pink box may have a pie, donuts, dim sum, or fried chicken; always more than enough. Kevin was a friend to all and taught us all life lessons of being brave, tolerant, accepting, proud, and, most of all, an appreciation for everyday. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at St. Theresa Church 4850 Clarewood Dr., Oakland at 10:30am with a reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers the family requests Gifts can be made in honor of Kevin Wong to Stanford University. Gifts will support the Stanford Cancer Center nurses in the infusion treatment area. Stanford University Medical Development 3172 Porter Drive, Suite 210 Palo Alto, CA 94304. Please be sure you include Kevin's name on the donation.

I am greatly saddened to learn of Kevin's passing. I met him in the eighth grade. I had just transferred in and he gladly took on the task of assisting me with acclimation and orientation - even then demonstrating that he had a big, open, welcoming heart - and brought me into his circle of friends. I shall be forever grateful to him for that. His daily life was a testimony to his spirit of generosity. The easily given smile and the deep, infectious laughter will be greatly missed. He left us much too soon. And though I feel poorer with his passing, I know that I am richer for having known him. God Bless his soul.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of one of my best high school and junior high friends - Kevin. I just digitalized a movie on YouTube starring Kevin with his big smile. I will always remember his smiles and fun loving nature.

Rest In Peace Kevin, we will miss your wonderful smile

I'm so sorry for your loss. Wishing I'd known the date earlier for the Celebration of Life services and I would have been there.
I will always remeber one scene of Kevin's life: each Book Fair at Aurora, he would come in late in the Fair time and ask what there was "left" on the Library Wish List that hadn't been bought for us. I'd show him a title but Kevin would just wave his hand at the list and say, "just buy them all from me." XO

I am proud to be able to call Kevin, my friend. In the recent weeks, months and years he has fought the battle w/valor and honor and in his own words "stubbornness." All of us will miss this special person who treated each person w/respect and honor, no matter what station in life. I will miss this truly special man in the morning chats at the dealership or seeing him at the ballpark. Condolences to all who were touched by Kevin and his spirit. All will miss him....he called his sales philosophy "old school", not to make a sale but to make a customer for life. And that's the he treated all people... for life.

We are so very sad to hear of Kevin's passing. I will never forget how kind he was to me when I first moved to Berkeley, so out of my element and with no clue how to take care of myself in the "big city." He treated me like a sister and made me feel safe. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this very sad time. Connie and Jim Sobczak

I never had the honor of meeting Kevin. However, I felt I knew him through his close friend, Patrick Gorman, who couldn't say enough about Kevin's generous and loving spirit. I send my heartfelt prayers and condolences to you Jeanette, your entire family and your network of friends who will miss him more than words can ever express.

Jeanette and family,
Just read the obituary in the Alameda Journal and recognized your name. I didn't know Kevin but from what I read, he was a wonderful husband, father, friend, brother in law and uncle to many. So sorry for your loss. I think of you often especially when driving on Fernside. May your family find solace in reading all the postings about Kevin.

So very sorry for the family's loss as well as his many friends, and business associates. He truly was a special individual in so many ways. I only had the honor of knowing him for the last seven years at Downtown Auto Center. He had the unique ability to bring order and peace to any situation. What a blessing to have known him though only for a relatively short time!
