Leon was not only the neighbor at the end of the street, he was the source of much humor, an exchanger of books with us, a knocker on the door at all unexpected hours of the day, the story teller of growing up in New York, of politics, of playing ball with a broomstick and half a tennis ball with his children, someone to wave to, someone we couldn't pass by without stopping to exchange hellos, a banty-legged tennis player I never got to play tennis with, a reader of my poems, and someone who didn't abide bad legislation when it appeared on the ballot. He will be sorely missed.

Leon was a wonderful person: intelligent, insightful, and dedicated to good causes. I admired his personal warmth and his spirited belief in what could be made better for all people.
