Lilan Kane Obituary

Lilan Gruner Kane 1916 - 2007 Resident of Lafayette Lilan Kane, 90, of Lafayette, CA, passed peacefully into eternal rest in her sleep at home on Tuesday, February, 6, 2007. Lilan was truly a "Great Dane." At the age of 20, Lilan traveled by herself to the US from Denmark and never returned except to visit. She has lived in California ever since. Along with her husband, Philip, she worked to build Rawson Drug & Sundry Company into an organization hailed by National Industry Magazines as the West Coast's premier Non-Foods Merchandising Company. At one time Lilan spoke seven languages, and throughout her life she continued to expand her very extensive vocabulary. She was an accomplished artist, equestrian, and skier in her younger years. After the age of 40 she became an avid golfer and was the club champion at Diablo County Club. In addition to participating, she would watch or read about all sports from football to tennis to golf and could probably challenge and win any sports trivia contest. She also loved animals evidenced by her generous gifts of time and money to many animal organizations, especially Tony LaRussa's ARF. She treasured her family and is survived by her son Ron Kane; daughters, Roberta Kane Senderov and Lindy Driscoll; three grandchildren, two great grand children, and other extended family members. She has continued to nurture her friendship with her best childhood friend in Denmark, Jonna Collin. We cherished her lively, caring and fun-loving personality in our lives. Her last six and a half years were blessed with her loving caregiver and very close friend, Lenny Escoto. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, February 9, 2007 at 1:30 PM at Hull's Walnut Creek Chapel, 1139 Saranap Ave. 925/934-5400. A reception, welcoming everyone, will follow the memorial service at the Kane's home in Lafayette. Private interment will follow at Oakmont Memorial Park in Lafayette. Donations may be made to ARF (Animal Rescue Foundation) in memory of Lilan Kane. Hull's Walnut Creek Chapel (925) 934-5400

No words can really ease the pain of your loss, but memories and time do help. I will always remember Li for her warm and generous hospitality when I was new to the area. She was truly a Grand Dame and will be missed by so many. Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.
