Linda Chown Obituary

Linda Chown
08/01/1942 - 04/03/2024
Professor Linda Chown, of Lithuanian, Romanian and English descent, passed away on April 3rd after a long illness. Born in Berkeley, California, she studied at SFSU with Stan and Anne Rice and at UC Berkeley in the 1960's. She was a professor emerita at GVSU. She was thrilled to always be captivated by learning.
Linda Chown was a prolific scholar, researcher, and writer, who published many books of poetry, a stream of reviews and prose overviews of writers, as well as a narrative critical study. She always wrote to be closer and to develop invisible threads which go somehow to the "other side of things."
She is survived by her sister Jennifer Chown, niece Rina Narcisse, nephews Marcellus Narcisse and Montgomery Narcisse and many cousins.
Services will be held at Noon on April 22, 2024 at Sunset View Cemetery 101 Colusa Avenue, El Cerrito, CA, with a Zoom Celebration of her life to be announced.

I was just remembering what a transformative impact Dr. Chown had on my life when I was a first-year student in her American Literature course (and then many more classes after!). I am deeply saddened to learn of her passing. She was an amazing teacher-scholar-poet who inspired me with her enthusiasm. Her kindness made me feel like I belonged.

I´m so sorry to learn this sad news. It was my honor to have been able to publish Linda´s poetry in several issues of my arts and literary journal: Meat for Tea: The Valley Review. This February, Meat for Tea Press published a stunning little book of her poems titled Annie: How She Came to Be. I´d love to send a copy of this book to her next of kin.

I am so sorry to read the news of Linda's passing. I never really met Linda but we became FB friends after the passing of my Sister Patsy Reeves. Patsy and Linda became friends when they both lived overseas many years ago and remained friends over the years. May her memory always be a blessing to her family and friends

Jennifer and family, I loved taking care of Linda for the last few years. I have missed seeing her every Thursday. Who is going to read poems to me, now. I know she loved you all so much. If there is anything I can do to help, back in in Grand Rapids, please let me know.

Enjoyed our times together watching movies and taking care of flowers. She liked the way I cooked carrots! Linda was my first client. Learned a lot from her.
