Lisa Thayer Obituary

Lisa B. Thayer Lisa was born on Christmas Day, 1960 in Berkeley, and died February 27, 2008, the innocent victim of a stray bullet from a daytime gun battle between gangs on the streets of Richmond. She was the daughter of Harriet Whitman Lee of El Cerrito and Edward C. Thayer of Berkeley; stepdaughter of Marcia L. Thayer; sister of Nina B. Thayer; and half-sister of Elizabeth A. Thayer. Her larger family is spread between both coasts and includes many uncles, aunts and cousins. She grew up in Berkeley, graduated from Albany H.S. and Harvard College, Cambridge, MA, in 1983, where she majored in psychology and rowed on the women's crew. She worked with a number of Bay Area organizations, including a Marin software company as executive assistant and an Oakland engineering firm as office manager. She was an accomplished skier and an outdoors enthusiast. Lisa had an outgoing, gregarious, fun-loving spirit and mixed with many people on many levels. She loved animals and loved to dance. She will be greatly missed by her family and her many friends. A private Memorial Service to celebrate Lisa's life will be held locally in the near future (contact 510-526-3805 for more information). Donations may be made in Lisa's memory to Richmond Brookside Shelter 510-374-7950, Richmond Mission Rescue 510-215-4888, Harvard College Fund 617-496-6147, or a favorite charity.

One summer morning in 1973, during our 15 minute recess in Daryl Lura's fourth grade class, Lisa and I hurried across the breezeway to the special room that had the Model ASR33 teletype, and printed an ASCII Snoopy picture. We were captivated by the technology.

On Saturday, April 25, 2015, many members of the extended Thayer family gathered at Harvard's Weld Boathouse to dedicate a racing shell in Lisa's honor. Lisa's parents made touching comments and showed everyone how clearly Lisa is missed even after these 7 years gone by.

I was so sorry to hear of your loss. The thoughts of many are with you at this time of sorrow. My deepest sympathy, to Nina and her family.

I didn't know Lisa, but I know her sister. Nina, this is such a senseless waste of potential, and I am so sorry for your loss.

I rowed with Lisa many years ago and admired her for her unique combination of strength and sunny disposition. I remember rowing behind her one day when it was sleeting/snowing. At first her back was covered with frost and her braids looked like they were frozen solid. During the workout she was pulling so hard that everything started thawing. I remember her standing up at the end of the workout as she got out of the boat; her face was pink, she was in those grey baggy sweats; water was dripping off of her nose and her braids, and she was beaming. She sure loved to row.

I was saddened and shocked to read of Lisa's death on row2k.

I coached Lisa at Harvard some years ago and remember her with much fondness. She had a wry sense of humor - just a great person.
