Lotte Weiss Obituary

Lotte Weiss

November 21, 1922 - July 9, 2018

Lotte Weiss (nee Bauer), a long-time San Francisco resident, died peacefully on July 9, 2018. She was preceded in death by Sidney Weiss, her husband of 66 years, and her sister, Marianne Strauss. Lotte is survived by daughters Judy (Stuart Swiedler) Weiss of Oakland, CA and Susan (Andy Vince) of Gainesville, FL and three grandchildren, Reva, Elaine, and Eric. Lotte was born in Nuremberg, Germany, and her parents sent her off alone by train and boat to England at age 16, in 1939, to escape the increasing Nazi terror. After working for one year in England and one year in the New York City area, she was reunited with her parents in San Francisco. One day in 1942 her father happened upon an acquaintance and fellow refugee from Nuremberg, and they introduced their daughter and son to each other. Lotte's and Sidney's romance was interrupted by the war, but soon after its end they married. Lotte was a consummate homemaker: an avid cook and baker, a gardener, a knitter and seamstress. In addition, she was the bookkeeper for her husband's businesses, Faxon Garage and then Goniff Motors. She and Sidney created and loved a beautiful home in San Francisco and a cabin in Marin County where they entertained friends and family. A memorial service will be held on August 17 at 2:00 PM at Temple Emanu-El in San Francisco.
