Louis Enright Obituary

Louis William Enright, Jr. March 22, 1933 - September 9, 2006 Louis "Lou" was born in New York, but soon moved to Greenwich, CT, where he spent most of his youth. As the oldest of 11 children, Lou devoted much of his spare time helping his family make ends meet, working after school and weekends. In 1951, at 18, he joined the Army, and was immediately sent overseas to the war in Korea. After a distinguished service record in the Korean War, he joined the American Occupation Forces in Germany, in 1953. There he met and married Gale Vollmar, a native San Franciscan and his loving wife for 51 years. Together they traveled from Germany to the Army SHAPE Headquarters in Paris, and then in 1958 to Fort Rucker, AL. Following his honorable discharge in 1959, he moved with Gale and their two children, William and Dawn, to settle in San Francisco, where he would remain for the rest of his life. Lou was known to friends and acquaintances as a sharp businessman and excellent conversationalist. In the 1960's he worked as a senior loan officer with Wells Fargo, and in the 1970's he successfully ventured out on his own to become an antique dealer, co-managing a shop on Clement St. Following, in the 1980's through early 90's, Lou became a collector/dealer of rare books and prints. He was always very energetic and tireless in his searching for optimum priced antiques, books, and prints. Lou basically retired from print dealing in the mid 90's, deciding to turn his focus upon volunteer work for senior citizens. During these last 12 years Lou was an active member with VFW, as both an officer and champion for their fundraising events. He also spent countless hours collecting and organizing delivery of bread and extras to many elderly citizens in our community. Over the last 30 years he and Gale traveled to Europe many times, exploring the cities, visiting museums, and learning about art and history. Lou was an avid 49er faithful and season ticket holder for over 35 years, and enjoyed attending home games with his son and close friends. Lou is survived by his wife, son, daughter, and his six grandchildren: Autumn, Sonja, Kyle, Ian, Cale, Natalie. He has several siblings in the Eastern US. He will be missed by all who loved and knew him. There will be no service or memorial at Lou's request. Immediate family members will receive his remains, and commit them to the open sea.

I have such wonderful memories of conversations with Lou when I worked at Pacific Book Auction Galleries (and before that at California Book Auction). I always looked forward to chatting with him about books, oysters, and his travels. What a kind, wonderful, lively human being.

Lou was a "do-er" as was obvious to all of us parents and even more importantly, our children. As impactful as his generous actions was the gracious, modest spirit with which he did them. Yet its that smiling and cheerful presence that all of us at the San Francisco Friends School may miss the most. Meg Hart
