Louise Devries Obituary

Louise deVries
November 7, 1934 - August 4, 2022
Louise Lazarus deVries died peacefully at home on Thursday August 4th in San Rafael, California.
Born in 1934 in San Francisco, Louise spent most of her life in the Bay Area. She attended Grant Elementary School, Dominican High School and Stanford University. Her career included work in the offices at Town School for Boys and Katherine Delmar Burke School, both in San Francisco. She also had a strong commitment to supporting community through volunteering, and contributed her time to the Kansas City Art Museum, Children's Hospital in San Francisco and Rota Club of San Rafael. Having resided in San Francisco, Davis, Portola Valley and Larkspur in California as well as Kansas City, Kansas, she enjoyed living for the last decade at Smith Ranch, where staff and fellow residents became close friends. She particularly valued serving on the board of directors and a variety of committees, sharing a community vegetable garden spot and managing the residents' library.
A lover of art, music and reading, Louise traveled extensively during her life, most often with her late husband Dr. Pieter deVries. A devoted mother and grandmother, she often preferred to sit at the "kids table" on holidays. She kept lifelong friendships while always welcoming new people into her life. Her many friends will remember Louise for her independent nature, sense of style and humor, astute insight and love of Rummikub and bridge. Louise had a keen intellect and followed current events as well as most sports. She was an early adopter of technology and stayed current on fashion and news. Louise also loved to swim and walk.
Louise is predeceased by her only brother, Alan Lazarus, her first husband, Marvin H. Tennefoss, and her second husband of 35 years, Dr. Pieter A. deVries. She is survived by her children Lynn Tennefoss (Johnnie Moore), Michael Tennefoss (Tina Seelig), Nan Chrostek (John Chrostek) and Joan deVries (Mark Rossi) and her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
