Dear Nancy and Jim, my thoughts are with you at this time of mourning for your beloved mother. Though she lived a long, full and rich life, you must feel a huge loss now that she's gone.
I'm so grateful to have known Louise and spent time with her during the formative years of my childhood and adolescence on numerous joint family back-packing and boating adventures, as well as gatherings at your home. Louise's consistent kindness, wisdom and good humor made me want to be like her when I grew up!
A few of many memories that come to mind--
On one of our back-packing trips in the early '60's, the dads, topog maps in hand, had led us off trail on an increasingly treacherous trek towards their desired destination. It was getting late, and they said, "we'll just go over one more ridge", when Louise, Jeannette Harper and my mom took off their packs, put their feet down and said, "No, we're going to set up camp right here", sending us kids off to gather firewood and get water from the stream for cooking dinner. I was very relieved!
On our cabin cruiser trip among the San Juan Islands we supplemented our meals with local seafood we foraged and caught. One night raw oysters on the half-shell were served up, and Louise insisted we kids all have at least a taste, then took a photo of our grimacing facial expressions right afterwards!
Years later, after we all had kids of our own, I recall being at a multi-generational family get-together at your home in Piedmont, with my young daughters. We were all hanging out in the lovely backyard garden, when the doorbell rang. Louise went to answer it and returned with my not quite 2-year old Jessica in her arms. Apparently, though the backyard was fenced in, Jessica had managed to find a side gate and ventured out onto the sidewalk in front of the house. Fortunately, a neighbor happened to notice this, and steered her to the front door, asking Louise if anyone at the party was missing a child. I was pretty horrified but glad it all worked out. Louise noted that Jessica was destined to grow up to be an adventurous explorer of unknown places (yup, she did!).
Louise, your beautiful spirit will remain forever in my heart. Thank you for being in my life!
