Lucy Calvillo Obituary

Sister Lucy Calvillo, RSM
Sister Lucy Calvillo died at the age of 87 on December 29, 2025 at Marian Oaks in Burlingame.
Mary Lucy was born to William and Lucy Vargas Calvillo in San Francisco in 1938, and grew up in St. Peter's Parish where she was taught by the Sisters of Mercy in Elementary and High School. She entered the Community in 1956 and professed her vows in 1959.
She earned a Bachelor's degree from Russell College then began a ministry of over 50 years of teaching first and second grades in Catholic Schools in the Bay Area as well as in Southern California. From early on, she could see that some students were bright but were having difficulty with reading and she recognized that reading was key to all other learning. This led her to study at San Francisco State College and earn a Master's Degree in special education. She was able to bring this background and experience to help innumerable children have a strong beginning to their time in school.
She lived her motto "Serve the Lord with Gladness" which was reflected in her spritely quick motions and dedication to her ministry. Always generous with her time, she studied cosmetology in order to provide regular expert haircuts to the sisters in retirement.
She is survived by a nephew and nieces: Steve Calvillo, Christina Stathan and Cynthia Mitchell, sister-in-law Arlene Calvillo, several cousins and their children, and her loving community of the Sisters of Mercy.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday January 22 at Mercy Convent chapel at 10:30 followed by a 1:30 p.m. burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma. Memorial gifts may be made to the Sisters of Mercy, 2300 Adeline Drive, Burlingame, CA 94010.

Sister Lucy was my first grade teacher at Holy Name in San Francisco. Even though I am 65 years old today I can remember her clearly. She obviously made a big impact on my life and for that I am grateful. Thank you Sister Lucy!

Sister Mary Lucy was my first-grade teacher at Holy Name School in SF 1960-1961. At our 50th reunion in November of 2019 we were so blessed that she came. She was a favorite teacher to all. My condolences to her family and please know she will be in my prayers.

I have many fond memories working with Sr. Lucy during my 10 years at St. Peter's. I was in my early years of teaching and she was an inspiration.
