Dear Diane, Suzanne and Rebecca, I am now on April 20th, 2024, enjoying rereading your mother´s book, THE SHORT SEASON BETWEEN TWO SILENCES: THE MYSTICAL AND THE POLITICAL IN THE NOVELS OF VIRGINIA WOLOLF! I recall well Madeline thinking out loud about what she hoped to accomplish with regard to her marvelous then in progress! I like the two blurbs on the back cover. Jane Marcus began hers by commenting, "In exquisite and seamless prose..." Catherine R. Simpson wrote, "Madeline Moore has a lively, original, vibrant intelligence!" Yes, this was my friend and matron of honor as I knew her! Simpson continued, "THE SHORT SEASON BETWEEN TWO SILENCES will burnish and deepen our understanding of Virginia Woolf!
It´s so to be thinking about your mother, my friend, and revisiting her book published 40 years ago!
My best to you all!

I didn't know Madeline had passed away. She was an important influence in my life when I was a UCSC student. And yes, she got me to really appreciate Gertude Stein and Virginia Woolfe. I even met up with her in London and Paris after I graduated to visit some of the haunts of those authors together. A wonderful, brilliant, warm woman who engendered excitement and enthusiasm in her students. Rest well, Madeline.

One of my favorite professors at UCSC... she managed to get me to love Virginia Woolf and appreciate Djuna Barnes and Gertrude Stein. I'll never forget the time she defended my take on an excerpt from "Day of the Locust," when several women in the class took exception to my point (rather vociferously, I might add)... She jumped to my aid and agreed with me, shutting down the chorus that was ready to skewer me (all good literary college fun). She encouraged me as a writer and was always cool and classy. Sorry to hear about her passing. Allen Appel

Dear Diane, Suzanne and Rebecca,
I send you my sympathy on the passing of your
wonderful mother, Madeline. She was a very good
friend and excellent scholar. I'm glad she's no
longer struggling with illness, but will miss
knowing that she's with us. She made my life
better.
With warm regards,
Pam
