Malcolm Gutter Obituary

Malcolm D. Gutter
Malcolm D. Gutter of San Francisco, died peacefully October 2, 2021. He was born to Jerome & Matilda Gutter in New York City, NY. He is survived by his partner of 35 years, Timothy Thornburn and his three nieces; Sheryl McQuade, Deborah Goldenberg and Frances MacAllister. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Robert H. Gutter.
At an early age he was attracted to the fine arts, listening to classical music with friends. Throughout his life, this love stimulated the development of an encyclopedic knowledge of the genre. This is a passion he shared with his brother Robert, an accomplished conductor and musicologist. And, not immune to popular culture, he enjoyed the classic cinema of Hollywood and England, big-band music of the 1930s-40s and early television comedies. He loved food and demanded the highest quality ingredients.
Malcolm attended Stuyvesant High School and earned a Bachelors degree at The City College of New York. Moving to California he received a Masters degree at University of California, Berkeley. Malcolm was an emeritus professor of economics and decorative arts at Foothill College and the University of California Berkeley Extension.
He was an authority on antique Meissen porcelain which he collected for over 30 years. The collection is recognized internationally as one of the most important of early Meissen and is published in a catalogue raisonne, "A Princely Pursuit: the Malcolm D. Gutter Collection of Early Meissen Porcelain". These wonderful pieces have been gifted to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

I was in his Econ 1A class at Foothill College, c. `86-`87 and always remember his "it comes from the light bulb" description of where money comes from. Hah! After dropping from his class, due to receiving a D on a test, I earned a B.S.B.A. from San Francisco State, in addition to a Certificate in Training & Human Resource Development at U.C. Berkeley Exchange. Just always remembered him, my he RIP.

Malcolm was an active member of the San Francisco Ceramics Circle. I met him at one of their annual meetings. He was passionate about opera and his Meissen collection, which will enrich the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. He could also be very funny.
