Manuel Mingoia Obituary

Manuel Edwin Mingoia

April 20, 1926 - September 13, 2017

Educator, avid traveler, generous volunteer are some of the roles for which Manuel Edwin Mingoia will be remembered. "Ed" Mingoia, as he was widely known, died at his San Francisco home after a long decline with pulmonary disease.
Ed's early schooling was in Los Gatos followed by attendance at Santa Clara University, Cal Berkeley and Bachelor and Master degrees from San Francisco State. While still a Cal student he began part-time teaching in San Pablo followed by full time years in Burlingame and Barstow elementary schools, retiring from the Elk Grove (Sacramento) school district as a language arts specialist. He was chosen by the US Department of Education to help teacher training programs twice in Ethiopia and once in Nepal.
Ed made two round-the-world trips, the first by sea and the second by air. He participated in more than 25 Road Scholar (Elderhostel) learning trips. Speaking both languages, he particularly enjoyed visits to Italy and Sicily (lineage).
Volunteering and support of humanitarian organizations increased after retirement including the SF Italian American Service Agency, as a facilitator for the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance at St. Francis Hospital and several civil rights organizations.
Manuel Edwin Mingoia is survived by Betty Romero (San Francisco), niece to her beloved uncle; nephew, John (Lisa) Sapone (Oceanside); predeceased this past July by his endeared sister, Isabelle Sapone. (Campbell/Oceanside) at age 107, and supportive cousins and friends. There were no services at his request; burial at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery Mausoleum.

My cousin Manuel was full of spark and joy. He took great delight in food and telling stories, history and laughing. I will always remember the twinkle in his blue eyes!

My Uncle Manuel was such a wonderful man to everyone. He is someone I have looked up to as a great man doing kind, generous, and world enriching things like teaching English to children in other countries. He's been a history buff, grew up with his large Italian fruit farming family. A tie to my honorable immigrant family from Italy to America where the "streets are paved in gold." His passing is of deep loss to me. But I find peace knowing he is with his beloved sister, my grammy, Isabella who we just lost on July 20th at 107yrs and 3 months old. They both were the most amazing and beautiful souls in my life. I'm sure they are having a good time being all together with all their family and friends along with my wonderful best mom ever, Virginia, who we lost in 2013. I'm sure they're making a good place for me when I join them one day. I miss you my great "Uncle Ed". I love you and look forward to being with you again. You'll always live in my heart and soul. Love your niece, Rachelle Munson
