Margaret Boyd Obituary

Margaret "Peggy" (Tivnan) Boyd

January 18, 2016

Dr. Margaret (Peggy)
Boyd
Died Jan 18, 2016
Peggy, devoted mother, grandmother and wife, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family from complications of pneumonia.

She was born and raised in The Bronx New York along with her two brothers, John and James, to Irish immigrants, John Tivnan and Margaret (Tobin) Tivnan.

She left New York as a flight attendant for Eastern Airlines where she met her first husband Donald Boyd. They moved to Florida where she had three boys Dan, Kerry and Brian. Her husband Donald died in 1962 leaving her with 3 sons age 3-5 and without career or degree. She was a courageous, remarkable woman going to work and school and achieving an RN from Florida State University.

In 1970 she received a grant from the University of San Francisco to continue her education in nursing.

She was awarded a master degree at UCSF while also teaching at the university. She went on to receive her PhD from UC Berkeley. During this time she met her second husband, David Wilson. Upon completion of her PhD, she published a book, "The Silent Wound" in 1984, which presented her research findings on the link between adolescent female sexuality and breast cancer.

In the 1990's she worked on several grants for Cancer research and which set up some of the first California breast cancer registries.

In addition to her professional life, she enjoyed traveling the world. She especially enjoyed visiting Ireland, her ancestral home. In 2007 she arranged a family reunion in An Rhin (Ring) Ireland for the American side of the family to meet the Irish side.

Peggy is survived by her three sons Daniel, Kerry and Brian. She also is survived by her six grandchildren Ian, Alana, Delia, Granya, Katie and Gemma.

Always an Inspiration to Family, friends and students, Peggy was a generous, courageous, kind and dignified woman who despite overwhelming challenges, lived a great life devoted to her family, friends and Public Health.

A service will be held at St. Ignatius Church on Friday, January 29 at 12 noon followed by burial services at the Presidio. Send flowers or contributions may be made to The American Breast Cancer Society.

I met Peggy in the fall of 1970 when we both started on the UCSF nursing school faculty.
You from NY..me from rural texas..friends for over 40 years.. I have many pleasant memories of our time together during our SF years.. visits to Perry's on Union St; Tahoe & snow & my graduation party @ your house....followed by many long distance conversations, after I moved east. I know how much you cared for your children & grand children.I miss talking things over w/you already.... You will be in my thought & prayers always Peggy. Thanks for the memories...Helen....

I am truly sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. Just got a call from Mary Mahin informing me of this. She was a wonderful lady and I know how much she loved her three children and her grandchildren. May Margaret rest in Peace.

Danny, Kerry and Brian,

I probably owe my life to your mom, as I'm sure you know.

I am so grateful our family had her as our neighbor all those years ago when we lost our mother. Peggy's strength and emotional generosity helped us through that difficult time / we're forever grateful.

Peggy was a world class personality and force of nature, and equally, I know, a ferocious "tiger mother" before that term existed. The world is less vibrant, less interesting with her gone. I'm sorry for your loss.

On behalf of Dad, Dave and El, we wish you our warmest and grieve with you her passing.

I'll never forget Peggy

Just seems like yesterday I walked into UCSF School of Nursing and saw a familiar FSU smiling face. Peggy was always ready to listen, give a helping hand and was and is a friend I could count on. We have had laughs, tears, and agony but she always looked forward to possibilities and loved life to its fullest. Love you always Peggy

Peggy was my mentor in graduate school at UCSF Graduate School of Nursing suggesting courses and even referring me to my nursing teaching job after graduation. I admired her bright spirit, seemingly unending energy and kindness. Yes, Peggy was an inspiration and friend, she is truly missed.

In sympathy,
