We have lost our beloved Marnie after a brief illness. The first born of Margaret P. and Samuel H. Rogers of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Marnie attended Kenwood School and graduated from Northrop Collegiate School in 1953. She was the only female Chemistry major in her class at Stanford University, where she received her B.S. degree in 1957. At Stanford, she met Stanley J. Hartmann, whom she married, and together they had three wonderful children—Peg, Barb and Eric. They lived in Petaluma, Arcata and Newark, California. In addition to being a loving and supportive mother, Marnie pursued her career as a chemist at Archer Daniels Midland, the Veterans Administration, Dow Chemical, Stanford Research Institute, Dexter Midland Corporation and Jones Hamilton. More significantly, Marnie made and kept friends wherever she went and whatever she did. After retiring, Marnie took and generously supported OLLI classes in Berkeley and indulged her passion for Stanford sports. In addition to great times at Bass Lake (MN) with family and friends, she enjoyed exploring the rich cultures of the world, visiting Cuba, Peru and the Galapagos, Bhutan, Turkey, Eastern Europe, Morocco and many other other places. Moreover, Marnie took each of her eight grandchildren on a special trip of their own. She was preparing to set off for the Silk Road and Iran when she fell ill. As one of her nurses said, she was a dynamo. To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.

I'm so glad I got to be acquainted with Margaret, my dad's cousin. I am late in learning of her passing. She was very kind.

Thank you Marnie for sharing your gentle and compassionate wisdom, peace and light with us. I enjoyed talking to you at church, during classes, meditation practices, Flatlanders gatherings, Stanford holiday concerts and walks around the lake in Newark. I miss you but am so grateful for the strong and kind role model that you provided for me and others who knew you. Blessings to you, your family and friends.
A beautiful rose Marnie placed in her guest room foer me that she wrote "Welcome".

My deepest sympathies to Marnie's family. May God give you much peace and comfort.
Memories I treasure:
Marnie:
Last Christmas 2016, I had a personal challenge and experienced a breakdown. I reached out to you. Your love, compassion and kindness was the best medicine. You opened your home and I stayed with you for a week. You cooked us dinner, we enjoyed wine and had good conversations with much laughter. I kept sneaking your yummy persimmon cookies. I was able to get some healing with your nurturing and beautiful home. I enjoyed your positive spirit and high energy. It was contagious!
I had a relapse in May 2017. I welcomed your invitation to stay at your home for another week. I celebrated my birthday and Mother's day at your home. You were concerned I would be alone. I assured you I would go out with my son. My son Aaron was very thankful I was in good hands with you. He was happy to finally meet you.
My other happy memory is when Pia, Kathleen, you and I stayed in Pacific Grove, Asilomar Center. You and I shared a room and hit it off quickly. The four of visited Carmel, walked on the beach, shopped, ate, played cards and laughed a whole lot.
I will miss you greatly, but find comfort knowing you are watching over me. I feel privileged to have been your friend the past ten years. You have inspired me to be a better person and to be the kind of friend you were to me.
I will cherish these memories forever.
Sincerely,
Trish
