Margaret Smith (McGee), age 49, passed away unexpectedly on May 7, 2015 and our hearts are broken. Margaret was the third of seven children born to PJ and Kathleen McGee on June 11, 1965. She is preceded into eternity by her brave sister Helen (McGee), devoted mother Kathleen (McGee), dear sister in law Georgene (McGee) and loving father and mother in law, Charles and Dolores (Smith).
Margaret leaves behind her devoted husband Tom Smith, and their three courageous children, Erin, Stevie and Shannon. She is survived by her adoring father, PJ McGee, cherished sister Colleen and husband Phil Malouf (Kathleen and Kevin) and proud brothers, Patrick (Shane, Ashley, Danielle and Jaquelyn), Tom and wife Tammie (Kara & Justin), Michael (Kaitlyn) and John and wife Cherie (Hayley, Danny and Lisa). She is also survived by her sisters in law, Sharon and husband Bill Simms (Katie and Kelly) and Nancy Smith. Margaret also leaves behind her aunt Vonnie, uncle Sean McGee, cousins Sean T. and wife Gina and Shannon, as well as her aunts, uncles and over 100 cousins in Ireland. Finally, she leaves behind her dear friend of over 30 years, Celia Barbaccia.
Margaret was born and raised in San Francisco and lived there most of her life. She attended Our Lady of Mercy Grammar School and graduated from Mercy High School in 1983. Margaret and Tom were married in September 1994 in San Francisco. They epitomized a true and loyal partnership while raising their children. Together, they made tough sacrifices to ensure that their children had the best educational opportunities.
Margaret instilled in her children the values that she embodied everyday – loyalty to family, dedication to her faith, strong character, commitment to education and a fierce work ethic. Not only was Margaret an ever-present source of strength for her own children, she also took on the role willingly and happily with her nieces and nephews.
Margaret started working at Beronio Lumber in San Francisco in 1990, a job that she loved. She exemplified dedication and commitment at work and established a large network of customers, many of whom became good friends. Margaret had just completed her 25th year at Beronio Lumber at the time of her passing.
Margaret will be remembered for her silly sense of humor, her kitchen dance parties and her take-charge attitude. The loss of Margaret leaves a void in our lives forever. However one thing is certain, her life and the selfless way she lived will carry on through her family and friends. She is surely protecting her husband and children in heaven just as she had done here on earth. Her legacy as a wife, mother, daughter, niece, sister, cousin and friend is something that can never be taken away.
Friends are invited to visit after 5:00 pm on Thursday, May 14th at Saint Stephen Church, 451 Eucalyptus, San Francisco with a rosary at 7:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will be Celebrated on Friday, May 15th at 10:00 am at Saint Ignatius Church, 650 Parker Avenue, San Francisco. Parking at the Koret Center, Turk and Parker Sts or Kendrick Law School on Schrader St. Committal Holy Cross Cemetery 1500 Mission Road, Colma.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Saint Ignatius College Preparatory in memory of Margaret Smith is preferred.
