Margaret Tan Obituary

Margaret Julia Tan Of San Francisco, California passed away in the comfort of her home on October 26, 2011 at the age of 78 after a long, courageous battle with cancer. "Marge" was born on June 10, 1933 to Jordan and Alice Wright Liang who predeceased her. Raised in Shanghai, she later moved to Hong Kong where she met and married her loving husband, Thomas S. Tan, who passed away in 1988. They immigrated to the United States in the early 60's and settled in Mill Valley. They later moved to San Francisco where she resided until her death. Marge is survived by her son, Ernest Tan, his wife, Christina, her three grandsons, Alexander, Jacob and Joshua of Hillsborough. Marge had a very strong spirit. She cherished her time traveling with good friends and family and always enjoyed a great meal with an equally great glass of wine. She was an extremely generous wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Marge is now resting in peace with her beloved Sunny. She will be missed by all who knew her, but never forgotten. A Memorial celebration of her life is planned for Thursday, November 4 at St. Vincent de Paul Church at 2320 Green Street, San Francisco at 9:15 am. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to either, the "Carol Franc Buck Breast Care Center, at UCSF" or the "Asian Liver Center, at Stanford".

Please accept our condolences on the passing of your wonderful mother. Marge was a gracious and welcoming person who easily shared her time and experience with others. She showed genuine interest with her bright eyes and willing smile and made people feel very special. She was a great traveling companion, always eager to try something new or introduce you to something she especially liked.

We had many special experiences with Marge and Tom, such as eating soup-filled dumplings in Taipei, shopping for jewelry at Louise's in Hong Kong, and enduring a long formal dinner at the Geisha House in Japan, sitting on the floor. But perhaps the most memorable experience was the trip to the Hyundai Container Facility near Pusan. When we arrived, all the employees were lined up and clapping under a huge banner that read "Welcome Mr and Mrs Tan, Welcome Genstar" . Marge looked so surprised, yet delighted, as we were outfitted with hardhats and gloves and led on a tour of the factory. It was a wonderful experience being there with her and traveling with the both of them.

Also, Marge did a very special favor for our son Will by being his special person for Grandparents Day at Town School. He was so proud to show her around his school and introduce her to his teachers. Although we are not sure everyone was convinced that she was his grandmother!

Knowing your parents has been a very important and formative part of our lives. We think of them very often and consider ourselves lucky we had the opportunity to get to know them well.

Best wishes as you move forward.
