Marvin Tripp Obituary

Marvin Tripp
November 19, 1925 - August 30, 2022
Marvin Russel Tripp passed away on August 30, 2022 at the age of 96. A life-long Californian, he graduated from Oakland Technical High School, the California Maritime Academy, and the University of the Pacific, and earned a Master's Degree in Education from San Francisco State University.
During the early 1950s, Marv performed on television in Hollywood and San Francisco, and was a production singer in Las Vegas, going by the stage name Jay Reynolds. Upon starting a family, he turned to education as his primary career, as a teacher then as an elementary school principal, mostly in the Oakland Public Schools.
Marv continued to sing for various Bay Area dance bands on holidays and weekends, and produced a recording, A Guy Who's Gotta Sing. He also sang as a member of the Bohemian Club.
Marv met the love of his life Jeanette when they were both 15. They married at 20 and spent the next 68 years together. They enjoyed gardening, traveling, and entertaining family and friends.
Marv was an avid tennis player and golfer into his 90s. He recorded four hole-in-ones. In retirement, Marv participated in many local organizations, including the Bohemian Club, the Bay Area Council of the National Association of Investment Clubs, and the Citizens of Oakland Respond to Emergencies program. After Jeanette's death, Marv moved to Davis where he continued to lead a vibrant and active life of service and entertainment until his death.
Marv was preceded in death by his wife Jeanette and by his sister Joan Hough. He is survived by his sister Beverly Montgomery (Bill), his children Cynthia Tripp, Tom Tripp (Debra), and Steven Tripp (Elise), eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on October 21 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Oakland, followed by a reception. A gift in Marv's memory may be given to Oakland Technical High School or to the University of the Pacific or to Hanna Boys Center.

I met Marv when he introduced our band at Atria Covell Gardens where he was the host/announcer of the many musical performances. Later my mom moved in there and he was very kind to us as she settled in. I learned on of his original songs for a musical history that he produced and directed. My copy of his CD will be cherished. I was very sorry when I heard from him that he was having heart problems. I will miss him.
