Mary Hurley Obituary

Sister Mary Edith Hurley, RSM
November 15, 1920 - July 21, 2023
Sister Mary Edith Hurley entered eternal life at the age of 102 on July 21, 2023, at Marian Oaks Life Center in Burlingame.
Born on November 15, 1920 in San Francisco, Aileen Patricia was the first of three children born to John and Margaret Hurley, natives of Co. Cork, Ireland. The Hurley children grew up in St. Peter's Parish in the Mission District and were immersed in the Irish community. Aileen learned Irish Step dancing and the violin, which she sometimes played as accompaniment to dancers. She followed her parents as an active member of the Rebel Cork Ladies Association and the Hibernians. Over the years Aileen continued to be an important member of the groups, joining them for many events including the annual St. Patrick's Day parade.
A year after graduating from St. Peter's Academy, Aileen entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1939 and made her profession of vows in 1942. She taught elementary grades and served as vice principal at St. Catherine's and Our Lady of Angels in Burlingame, St. Bartholomew in San Mateo, St. Joseph in Bakersfield, St. Anthony in Oakland, St. Charles in Imperial Beach, St. Aloysius in Los Angeles, St. Pius X in Santa Fe Springs, and in San Francisco at St. Peter, St. Gabriel and, St. Stephen, and Holy Name. She kept class photos of all classes she taught.
A sabbatical in Australia in 1984 led Sr. Mary Edith to deep connections with the Sisters of Mercy in Parramatta, NSW. She ministered there until 1989, maintaining ongoing friendships that led to many visits on both continents.
After her time in Australia, Sr. M. Edith returned to Holy Name School in San Francisco. An early user of computers, she passed on her skills to the students with the school's first computer lab for ten years. A delightful member of the Mercy community, Sr Edith was known for her easy outgoing manner, delightful sense of humor and welcoming hospitality to all.
Sr. Mary Edith is predeceased by her parents, John and Margaret Hurley, her sister Margaret (Clem) Zarcone and her brother, Joe (Teresa) Hurley. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, great and grand nieces, nephews, and her loving community of the Sisters of Mercy.
A vigil service will be held at Marian Oaks Chapel on Sunday, July 30 at 3p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 31 at 10:30 a.m. in Mercy Convent Chapel.
Both are located at 2300 Adeline Drive, Burlingame. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Sisters of Mercy, 2300 Adeline Drive, Burlingame, CA 94010.
