Always engaging others with a kind word and a warm smile, Mary Lou will be remembered for her devotion to all within her circle. She was a member of the Hillsborough Auxiliary to Community Gatepath, the San Mateo County Medical Auxiliary, AAUW, DAR, the Carolands Garden Club, Republican Women and the Town & Country Club. She was a proud Delta Gamma sister, a courageous Girl Scout leader during her daughter's junior high school years, and active with the San Mateo County Historical Society and the Altar Guild of the Congregational Church of San Mateo. Mary Lou was a superb hostess, who radiated energy and loved welcoming friends and family regularly into her beloved home.
Mrs. Mawdsley is survived by her children, Janet Mawdsley Offensend of Brooklyn, NY and Alan Dean Mawdsley of Frederick, MD; their spouses David Glenn Offensend and Teresa Ann Puhr Mawdsley; her brother Paul Murdock Ellwood, Jr., MD of Bonderant, WY; and four grandchildren, Rebecca Lee Offensend, Christopher David Offensend, Karen Ann Mawdsley and James Paul Mawdsley.
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, November 16 at 2pm at the First Presbyterian Church, 1500 Easton Drive, Burlingame, CA.

Mary Lou was the very first person that we met while attending an open house in Hillsborough in 1997. We bought the house next door to Mary Lou and Dr Dean Mawdsley and have raised our four children here. She was a surrogate Mother to me and Grandmother to our daughter and three sons. It was viewed as a rite of passage in our home to get a job watering Mrs. Mawdsley's garden or taking her recycling and trash bins to the curb. The job had to be performed to her exacting standards and was rewarded with cookies and caramel cake. We miss her each and every day...Ellen Hiemstra

Mary Lou was a wonderful classmate and friend to the members of the UCSF nursing school class of 1952. Her bright smile will be missed.

We treasure memories of supper visits with Mary Lou and Dean, then later with Mary Lou's friend George. Having known Dean since SM Hi and Mary Lou since her early days in AAUW, our friendship was a long one. Jan and Mary Lou had an unexpected visit one time en route to NY and shared laughs and cab. To all who loved Mary Lou and especially to Janet and Alan, we send our sympathy as you mourn your loss.
