Mary Shallenberger Obituary

Mary Ann Shallenberger Of Palo Alto died on Saturday at the age of 95. Born Mary Ann Wheeler in Spokane, Washington, she was predeceased by her parents and her sisters, Beulah and Gwen. She came to Palo Alto to attend Stanford University, where she graduated in 1936 with an AB in Speech and Drama. It was also there that she met her first husband, Frank Kuhns Shallenberger, who died in 1991. She was an officer in several local companies started by him, including Dynaship, Shalco, and Materials Analysis. She owned the Abacus (in Menlo Park) for many years, where she sold Asian antiques and art, and she was active in many local organizations, such as the Mid-Peninsula Family Service and its Bay Window Auxiliary, which named her "Everlasting Guardian Angel." She lived in the Palo Alto area for sixty years, with the exception of two years in Lima, Peru. Mary Ann married Philip Sherman in 1992, who passed away in August of 2010. Mary Ann was known for her passion, energy, deep caring for her family and others and sense of humor. She was a world traveler who had friends on every continent. She is survived by her sons Edward of Omak, Washington; Robert of Kamuela, Hawaii; Frank of Cupertino, California; and David of Dummerston, Vermont; She is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. There will be a memorial service in the spring.
